Roy Likes Portland's Reluctance To Make Trade

“Unless it’s like a great deal for us, then I think I understand the approach of not making a move and letting us fight it out,’’ Roy said. “We are still a good team.’’

“If we are healthy with everybody besides Greg (Oden) and Joel (Przybilla), we can beat any team in the West,’’ Roy said. “If we get in a seven-game series, we can beat any team, even without having our centers.’’

I know Brandon has to have that kind of mindset, but could Portland really beat any Western Conference playoff team in a seven game series with everyone but Greg and Joel? Which teams could Portland take out in a seven game series with all thirteen likely returning players healthy? I would say...

Likely:
Grizzlies
Hornets
Rockets
Spurs

Maybe:
Jazz (probably not beatable if they have home court)
Mavericks (the outcome against them is always uncertain)
Suns (same with the Mavericks)
Thunder (first playoff jitters for many young players, but still a ferocious team)

Unlikely:
Lakers (even with home games featuring Brandon, playoffs have always been a different story between these two franchises)
Nuggets (they have a big advantage under the basket)

Maybe if they had the number one seed and other teams were decimated. It is unfortunate he does not realize the vast importantance in playoff success, especially in the Western Conference, revolves around big men in the paint.

Very surprising Roy didn't say, "I see no value in most of my teammates and would love to see them moved. They all suck and they're bringing me down, and you can fucking print that shit in big bold letters."

Personally, I'm not fond of the thought of trading value just to rent a mediocre big for half a season (unless doing so would make us contenders this year, and that's not happening without Greg/Joel). I'm not opposed to trading, but I don't think it's the end of the world if we don't.

This would never happen. If you go by history he is afraid of change.

Translation:

KP buddy, please dont' trade and of my BFFs.

Something tells me Roy would make a HORRIBLE General Manager.

Heaven forbid the man has faith in his teammates.

He's not a defeatist *edited*

He isn't trying to be the GM, he's simply giving his opinion *edited*

And as much right as you have to criticize Brandon. I have just as much to criticize you.

Wrong, actually. You have every right to criticize other posts, but not the posters themselves. A subtle but important distinction...feel free to attack the points people make all you like, but not the posters themselves.

Public figures, like the players, coaches, etc, are fair game on the forum. The posters on this forum aren't.

Yep, just like last year huh Brandon?

We could have won it all last year.

We had the players to do it, but not the correct battle plan, or maybe no plan at all? :dunno:

I think we have a shot with what we've got.

BAKE IT & BE SCRAPPY!

You can't post "MARIS61 IS A MORON". :tsktsk:

You can post "MARIS61, YOUR POST READS LIKE A MORON WROTE IT". :biglaugh:

Very subtle, but meaningless distinction.

Ok, so don't criticize someone for how stupid they are.

Just the stupid things they say. Got it. Haha.

Either way I was talking about my god given freedom to say how I feel, but if it's against your forum rules, I respect that. At least I can still think whatever I want, right? :p

Nope. You can say, "MARIS, that's not a very good point. Let me enumerate the reasons why you're completely wrong about Sergio Rodriguez."

With the way Utah has owned us this season (and as much as it PAINS me to say that), I think they belong in the "unlikely" category with Denver and LA.

Pretty bold words by Roy nonetheless. Maybe he and Outlaw can help change my mind on the 21st.

Grizzlies
Hornets
Rockets
Spurs

I don't think we should put Houston in the 'likely' column. That team just for some reason has the mental edge over us. I'd hate to play them again in the playoffs as long as they got guys like Brooks, Scola, Landry and Battier healthy.

* edited* and *edited*

Unless we take on the Hornets in the first round we will lose against the Lakers, Denver, Houston, or Utah. I can lay down money for that.

portland could probably beat anyone but the lakers. it would take great play to beat a team like denver or utah(with how they are playing now), but it still would be possible.

I love Brandon but he is wrong here.

Portland without a defensive pressence in the middle has zero chance of winning a best of seven series against any of the top 4 teams in the west.

I see four potential playoff teams that this team could beat without a legit center.

Houston, Phoenix, Dallas and the Suns ... I'm tempted to add the Spurs, but I still can't bet against Timmy, Manu and Parker in a seven game series. The rest though? they either play too much perimeter defense or have to much inside play for us to beat with a mid-range jump shooting team.

Roy better bring this playoff attitude to his teammates now if they want to make a push into the playoffs. Because with Roy gone, LA definitely did not bring that gut into the locker room to fire up his teammates. Only Howard stepped up and went into a rampage in the locker room.

The way I look at it, if we make the playoffs, we would want to play a team that we absolutely owned all season long. That isn't going to happen when you are going to be the #8 seed. The way I see it, the Blazers are going to lock into the #8 unless Houston or Memphis makes a run. That means LA in the first round.

I can. I mean, I don't think the Blazers would be guaranteed to beat the Spurs in a series, but they wouldn't be guaranteed to beat the Rockets, Suns, Mavericks or Thunder (I assume that was your intended fourth team, you double-counted Phoenix in your list) either. I think the Spurs are nearly as beatable, these days, as those teams, especially at the end of another long season.

The Nuggets and Lakers are the only two teams in the West that I think are out of reach for the Blazers without Oden and Przybilla.
