It really doesn't have a lot to do with being chicken, they've recently had a major terrorist attack at their main airport, a coup by the military, the president has gone nuts and is rounding up everyone he thinks might be against him including children, the military has been pulled back from the border and ISIS is freely traveling in and out of the country.

Difficult times in Turkey at the moment indeed. Some soccer stars are leaving the country (see Mario Gomez). I wouldn't have signed there. But he may had some guarantees. Who knows.
