Wesley Matthews 'over' Trail Blazers reunions: 'I'm pretty sure they don't miss me'

I've never understood the chip on Wes's shoulder. Portland saw something special in him, was willing put him in a position to succeed and financially set him up for life. But then, a lot of mama's boys are like that.....the fact he's never expressed any real appreciation towards the organization is telling....

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he's probably feeling really defensive about his inability to recover from the Achilles injury, and is putting up a brave front because of it.

He's talking about his former teammates, and that's probably true. We only have 4 guys left on our roster that played with Wes.

But I think the fans miss him, his heart, work ethic and consistent night in, night out effort. I know I do.

While Wes has struggled, post injury, to return to his pre-injury level of play, what he has done in Dallas is miraculous.

He came back from a ruptured Achilles tendon in less than 7 months, an injury with a typical recovery time of at least 12 months. He blew his Achilles on March 5 and was in the starting line up for Dallas on opening night on October 28. Not only did he come back in record time, he led his team in minutes played last season and is currently leading the entire league in MPG.

He has certainly earned the Iron Man nickname and also deserves Rehab Monster, too. Through his hard work, he has completely re-written the timeline for coming back from a ruptured Achilles tendon - one of the most difficult injuries to come back from in all of sports. In many athletes, it's a career ending injury. Not Wes.

So yeah, as a fan, we miss that kind of effort. I won't be at the game tonight, but if I was, I'd give Wes a standing ovation during the player intros.

Inability to recover? He came back in less than 7 months, led his team in minutes played last year and is leading the entire NBA in MPG this season. He's got nothing to be defensive about - off the court. On the court, he is still playing hard nosed, lock down defense.

I heard from a little birdie that Wes became more self important as the years went on. I trust this little birdie; so Wes is off my list of players I like.

This is the sour taste in my mouth for him. I wanted to bleed and sweat tears with/for him. Then he said he was going to demand that huge contract when he knew we were trying to win it all and if we could have kept that team together AT THAT TIME, it felt like a contender.
MY beef is it was his huge contract demand that split things up and you don't make those demands in his situation without being selfish about it.
If he truly gave his all, he would have not done that to the team.
I still wish him the best though because on the court I don't know if Ive ever seen a better hustle

Nailed it

Wes woulda been a sure fire resign for me before that injury. He was that type of player IMO.

But the Wes today? Omg he's fallen off a cliff with his shooting. I wouldn't touch that contract for shit

Counting all players who ever played on the Blazers...
Wes is my second favorite Blazer of my lifetime.
First is Uncle Cliffy because I met him when I was a child.

Wes and Crabbe pretty much make the same $, I would take Wes any day over him.

Haiku fail.
I think that's poems right?
I was never good with poems.

When the football flies it goes high into the sky.
When it comes down don't let it touch the ground.
Catch it, tuck it, and run run run for a touchdown.

I meant his shooting. Good for him for participating, but his contribution to the game has been significantly lower.

Shooting 31% overall and 24% from 3 is not good. He never really recovered from his injury.

Shout out to Joe Freeman...he writes a pretty decent article. I loved Wes as a Blazer but he wanted to be a go to guy and make a max contract here...we dodged a bullet by letting him walk and he got really lucky with Cuban giving him more money than the Kings offered. I think we're better off with younger players that have better handles than Wes. I don't miss his chest high dribble

Well at least the hard feelings are gone and there is no acrimony between us. Let the healing begin....

I'll straight up say it....the guy changed. When he got to Portland he was cool as hell. You could tell he was happy to be wanted and in the league. Then that shit all went to his head. Last two seasons he was a different person. I'm not the only one who noticed.

Perfect. I'm tweeting this to Wes right now! :bgrin:

Aminu is shooting 25% overall and 24% from 3.

Wes, as you say is still recovering from injury.

What's Aminu's excuse? Clanking wide open jumpers off the side of the backboard. SMH.

Whoa, HCP thinks this too! First a little birdie and now a Blazer staff member. Two totally different people. I'm shocked frankly.
