I just saw a documentary on this cult. I've never seen such an arrogant and judgmental group of people. Flat out a scary bunch of people. "Gramps" makes David Koresh look like Bob Saget. People who aren't like them are going to hell. According to their guidelines and beliefs.

I'd love them to come to my area. If I saw them on the corner with "thank god for 9-11" signs I'd seriously drive by and dump of a bucket of paint on them. Jail time would be well worth it.

Wow...

I'm guessing you watched The Most Hated Family In America, which is a very good documentary.

Yeah, they are out of their minds. They are family cult which was brought up on hate, and in turn they spew venom toward the rest of the world because it's the only thing they ever knew.

I have a theory about Fred Phelps, I think he's either secretly attracted to men and it scares the living hell out of him, or he was molested as a child. I say this because the level of hate he spews towards gay people is definitely a sign that he is scared of them for some reason, possibly due to some traumatic event in his youth.

I love how Fred Phelps says Jews are going to hell but he only quotes the old testament while completely ignoring the new. He has to be one of the most ignorant people on the planet, and the sad thing is that it's a willing ignorance.

Thank god some of his kids were still sane enough to leave after they grew up. If I was one of his kids I would have killed myself as soon as the sperm hit the egg.

Living in the South in what is basically the bible belt I've seen people basically obsessed with Religion to the point everything in their life and their opinions are controlled by it. It's almost scary.

haha...a *** enabler? wtf is that?

i was at church the other day in downtown LA and cardinal mahony said that they were out there...no reason really they were there for the oscars and didn't have anything else to do so they protested at the cathedral.

At first she pissed me off, then I just laughed.

What an ignorant bitch, she's going to hell.

I'm not sick enough to do it, but you have to fight fire with fire. Find out when one of them dies, and then protest that funeral.

When the leader does, I have a feeling many will.

Have to start with some of the regular people there to get the real message accross. They will rationalize when it happens to the leader, but if it happens to nice Aunt Betty, and then old Joe the plumber down the street first, when they die, that will send more of a message.

They protested a funeral at my former High School of a kid who died in Iraq. They had cops within the group to make people have a 2nd though when planning to run them over. I told them what I thought of them...Idiots

Makes sense

A stark reminder of how ignorant and evil people can become when they believe in mythological superbeings.

Other than her obvious dedication to her "God" and honesty of character, I see few differences in her and other "believers" I have known throughout my life.

From Nov. '07:

The father of a fallen Marine was awarded nearly $11 million Wednesday in damages by a jury that found leaders of a fundamentalist church had invaded the family's privacy and inflicted emotional distress when they picketed the Marine's funeral.

The jury first awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages. It returned later in the afternoon with its decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress to the Marine's father, Albert Snyder of York, Pa.

If this goes through this is what you'd call a god smack. Ha!

There was an in depth internet article, Addicted to Hate. I don't have the URL but you can google it.

Tell me, though. I'm not tryint to start any fights, but how much difference is there between Phelps holding a sign that says "god hates ***s" and mainline churches spending millions of dolllars to crusade against civil rights for gays and lesbians? I see a difference in degree, not kind. The biggest difference, and what makes Phelps a pariah, is not his targeting of gays but his targeting of military personnel, plane crash victims, etc. How much did we read about him when he was picketing the funerals of people who died of AIDS? Is it OK to target gays but not (presumed straight) service persons?

Fucking pathetic. I'm a Christian but things like this make me embarassed for religion in general (lots of things around the world do as well).

When I read things like this I don't see a Christian, I see a fanatic. I'm sure it's similar to how the vast majority of Muslims view terrorists. These people are religious not spiritual. They're caught up in the rules of their particular church not their own personal relationship with God.

from wikipedia: "While its members identify themselves as Baptists, WBC is an independent church and is not affiliated with any known Baptist conventions or associations. The church describes itself as following Primitive Baptist and Calvinist principles, though mainstream Primitive Baptists reject Westboro Baptist Church and Phelps, regarding them as unaffiliated to the Primitive Baptists. The views that distinguish Westboro Baptist Church are views that most Baptists and Calvinists do not recognize, and do not consider to be in any way characteristically Baptist or Calvinistic."

people really should not think of these people as baptists or christians. they are neither.

can't be logical, rocketeer...believers in Imaginary Superbeings are all the same.

I don't get all these protester. i hate protestors in general and think if they're blocking the road we should have the right to run them the fuck over.

There is a difference in someone holding a sign that says "God hates (choose something)", fundamentally because they are trying to interpret what someone or something else likes. It would be just as ridiculous as if I held up a sign saying "CRANDC HATES KITTENS!". Multiple times you've posted that you love cats, if anyone chose to look it up. But for those looking for a reason to vilify you, they'll take your kitten hate and run with it. It makes them feel better, somehow. I don't quite get it.

I don't agree with him picketing ANYONE's funeral. That's just wrong, in my book. But imo only I think it's because the media believes (and iirc it was on Hannity's show that first showed this) that showing pictures of brave soldiers who sacrificed, flags flying, etc. is better copy than showing one of the millions around the world (straight and homosexual) who've died from AIDS-related diseases.

What makes Phelps a pariah is that he invented his own religion, he seeks to gain publicity for himself and does things that are constitutionally protected though seen as abhorrent by a vast majority of people in our country.

Crandc, I just saw "Wicked" Thursday (loved it!). There's a line (can't remember the exact words) that says you will be able to get people to obey if you find them a common enemy to hate. It's so true!

These people are sheep following a crazy man who's making a living off their donations... he has to keep them riled up or they'll just start thinking for themselves.

I will admit right here I'm one of those who believes in the "mythical higher being" and it's a very important part of my life. Jesus is about love not hate. I do not believe these hate mongers are being applauded in heaven... in fact, I think it's quite the opposite.

Every human being was created by and in the image of God. I don't want to get into a sermon but basically none of us are worthy of God's love but he loves us all unconditionally despite what Mr. Phelps claims.

Lol the Ron and Fez radio show like fucking around with Shirley Phelps-Roper by making her the show's "spiritual adviser"

Not really, there are very, very few non-family members of WBC (I think there's two). The family makes their money by getting law degrees and then working as attorneys.

From what I've read they've made their living off law suits (mostly against the city of Topeka) surrounding their right to picket. Mr. Phelps was eventually permanently disbarred years ago and some of the other family members have been temporarily disbarred. The law firm did initially make some good things happen in the civil rights movement but that was many years ago. I'm not an expert on this subject but I don't get the impression they really have clients other than themselves at this time. They claim to picket at least 6 locations a day (somewhere around 50,000 different events over the years)... they even protested at Mr. Rogers' funeral! Other than the unfortunate zip up sweater what did he ever do to draw their ire?

They've raised the concept of ambulance chaser to a new level by creating a "church" to funnel the money. They have tax exempt status and the ability to travel the world with their message and write it all off. It reminds me of the racket some of the "fundamentalist LDS" clans use except they take advantage of the government by collecting public assistance for all the "unwed" mothers and their children... they too are rejected by the church they allegedly claim to be a part of.
