Kobe and Tracy will start. Roy and Paul have to be locks. That means that, most likely, only one more guard gets picked. Who do you pick? Nash or Williams? I think you have to pick Nash. How crazy that Williams will miss the All Star game again.
 
McGrady has said that he won't play if selected.
 
If Tracy has any sense of fairness he will decline the invite.

As a PG, he might deserve it, but he's not the 2nd best guard in the WC right now.

You could make an argument that right now, due to the way the team is playing, Brandon is the 2nd or 3rd best guard in the western conference.

It would be pretty cool if the coaches elected Brandon to start in the ASG, if the team continues the play and he continues his play.
 
The problem is that, though he is losing, Paul has insane numbers (20/10/5/2).
 
A Roy-Kobe backcourt would be interesting to watch. That'd be kind of cool actually.

agreed, but his team isn't winning. It wouldn't surprise me in the least, but it also wouldn't surprise me to have the coaches and NBA reward Brandon (assuming things remain the same) for what they're doing.

Think about it. They're missing their starting SF (Batum), C's (Oden and Joel), backup PF/SF (Travis), and SG (Rudy). And even though they weren't expected to have big roles, they didn't have two of the rookies they drafted (Mills and Pendergraph). And now their starting PF, and backup PG.


And the team is still winning games!

My theory is that if they can win against LAC, Memphis and LAL, it'd be hard not to start him. Especially considering the toughness of our upcoming schedule.

The Lakers twice, Cavs, and Magic on this home stand. Overall, between now and the ASG, they play the Lakers twice, Utah twice, Boston, Dallas, Spurs, Houston and Phoenix.

If they can win 14 of the games between now and the ASG (and lose 6), that would be a really impressive feat. If by some miracle they can beat the Lakers twice, Cavs, Magic and the Spurs in that group of games?

Holy shit on a stick batman, it would be incredibly hard for the coaches to justify him not starting.

I imagine it'll be a Nash and Kobe backcourt. Kobe's going to be the highest vote-getter and Nash is putting up gawdy numbers while leading the Suns to a surprisingly good start. After that, Chris Paul absolutely has to be in, and then it's a crap shoot after that.

Brandon Roy has put AS caliber numbers. Monta Ellis is having a monster season, but he's on a horrible team. Deron Williams has been phenomenal. You can also throw rookie sensation Tyreke Evans in to the mix.

There's plenty of deserving candidates, so it'll be quite interesting to see what happens. My bet is that it's going to go to Roy or Williams, simply because their teams are likely to have better records at that point and players on winning teams usually get rewarded with ASG spots.

I wouldn't say he's a given. Monta Ellis is putting up just as good of numbers as Roy is, albeit on a poor team. Williams is averaging nearly 20ppg and is 3rd in the NBA in assists with 9.8 per game. Tyreke is also averaging 20pts and 5asts, along with 1.5 steals on an upstart Kings team.

While I'd say it's very probably (in large part because bringing Williams would give them 3 PGs), I wouldn't say it's a given.

Monta Ellis is playing 48 minutes a game, has a PER of 17 and plays for a losing team; scratch him from the list. Williams deserves to get in, IMO, but I can't see Tyreke getting in with the Kings playing sub .500 -- he'll get much love in the form of ROY honors and a trip to the Rookie-Sophomore game.

And Tyreke's PER is just about 18.

A frustrating point about PER.

Greg was the #2 C in terms of PER in the NBA. Not just the WC, but the WHOLE NBA.

Ahead of Bynum by over 4 and a half, and ahead of Howard, Lopez and Kaman. The way he was improving, he should've been a serious candidate for the coaches to vote in for the ASG.
 
From what I understand, McGrady can't decline unless he is actually injured.

Just from looking at the stats, I would say Paul and Kobe are the locks. Nash, Williams and Roy all have things in their favor. I think Evans is out in the cold for this year.

Team records matter a lot when it comes to coaches voting.

Roy is carrying his team to victories despite much adversity. Monta has yet to figure out a way to get his team 10 wins. They're not even CLOSE in this discussion. Roy will get MVP votes. Monta will not.
 
Oh and there are only 3 players who average at least 22ppg, 5.0 apg, & 4.5 rpg: LeBron, Wade, & Roy.
 
There's only 3 players averaging 19.5 ppg and 9.5 apg too. They're all in the western conference. See, I can do it too.
 
I think it should be Kobe and Paul as the starters, with Nash, Roy and Williams as the reserves.
 
How is CP3 able to garner so many votes? Not that his stats aren't insane, but how was he able to become such a high vote getter amongst the stupid casual fans while playing in New Orleans? It's not like he's a highlight dunk machine or had superstar hype first couple years.. Roy is putting up amazing stats right now, but is in 10th in voting behind guys like Aaron Brooks.. How did CP3 make that jump?

His games don't end at 12:30 AM Eastern ... and he is a cut above Roy.
