I know people are pissed and it's extremely frustrating that the Warriors are going to be the most talented starting five of all time, but what can the league do?

No rules were broken (except for tampering)

The most you can do is have a franchise tag to prevent something like what happened to OKC or to us last summer with LMA to guarantee that the other team is compensated.

I guess there could be a hard cap..... but that would suck for everybody.

Probably just have to make it almost stupid to leave your current team after so many years. Either that or make it almost impossible for a team to sign another teams UFA. Not sure how that would look?

That's about the only thing I can think of. But guys like LMA and Durant are taking LESS money to sign with contenders, so I'm not sure if more years will really do anything.

It has to be stupid money, IMO. It will be tough to get something in the CBA. Players will strike

The league controls the game results through officiating, any time they feel it necessary.

So nothing has changed leaguewise.

Also, I don't see GS as being anything better than they were this year, really. You can't have 6 on the court so for them to get Durant is really just making their bench another man deeper, and possibly upsetting their chemistry.

This is a completely separate topic. Superstars leaving their teams to go form super teams. It is a growing issue.

We can't have the durant to warriors thread as the catchall for all NBA related topics.

I dont see the big deal. it is what it is. injuries can happen to so their lock on the finals is nowhere near 100%

This is the logical result of the cap going up so much and so quickly.
It'll happen again next year, in spades. Westbrick is probably already scheming.
It'll take 5 or 6 years AFTER next year for things to settle back down...

but until then, the rich will continue to get richer.

The league can make it harder by not allowing defenders to get with five feet of the Warriors when they play them. That's what is going to make it so hard, is other teams won't be allowed to play defense, and the Warriors will score at will

The league could uncap salaries. No way the Warriors could do this if teams could offer Durant $40-50 million a year.

They could do that, but they won't. Parity is nice, but protecting owners' bottom line is paramount.

I think a franchise tag would be good, just so teams that lose their main player get something in return. Though super stars usually bolt to good teams with very low 1st round picks. Would a hard cap have prevented the last few cases such as this? I think Miami and Golden State cleared enough space to sign these guys as FAs under the cap. The NBA cap is "hard" in relation to signing free agents.

The soft cap is designed to help with player retention. It slants the FA game towards the team that has bird rights. I don't think eliminating it will help here.

It isn't. But what do teams who lose mega free agents gain? Nothing. And not only that teams, especially that of small markets, can't survive in the NBA. The only way they can is by sucking ass 50 years in a row like Philly and Minnesota and hope you strike gold in the draft. Small Market teams can't sign free agents, usually can't make lopsided trades because the player wanting out doesn't wanna go there, and has a hard time resigning there own free agents once they become UFA.

I don't understand why there are a lot of angry people. OKC fans? Yah I understand that, but reading reddit and people demanding for this to be fixed? What exactly did GSW do wrong? They drafted really well? Put great roles players around their people? Managed their contracts well? Enticed a marquee player to sign there because of all that? Why should they be punished for running an extremely solid organization.

Should Philly be punished for sucking balls, even though it seems like they're always in the lottery? And a franchise tag? I don't know? I don't like that. OKC knew the risk they were taking, they could have traded Durant. You guys could have traded LaMarcus. Orlando could have traded Dwight way sooner. Durant gave OKC 9 years of commitment and superstar ball, he has earned the right to sign wherever he wants too. Now OKC needs to decide if they want to go down this road with Russell again or trade him for picks and young players.

You take a rat and put it in a maze with a piece a cheese. Right before it gets to the end of the maze you remove the piece of cheese. If you do this repeatedly and think, "It's there you just have to believe in the system?!" It'll stop trying after a while. That's where the NBA is with most small market fans. San Antonio lucked into a great situation with Pops and Duncan.

I was talking about OKC. Not Golden State.

Giving the Thunder credit for drafting Durant at #2 is like giving me credit for marrying a model. It wasn't a difficult decision.
