He's a fucking idiot. 40% of Undocumented Immigrants come by plane...

My big problem with the wall is that it’s just a money pit. Lots to build, lots to protect and lots to maintain while not likely to make a big impact.

I would like more legal immigration but with the laws as they currently are I don’t have a problem a the wall in theory. But I do have a problem with waste.

What's there has already made a big impact. The more that's been spent, the more "effective" border control has been. Unfortunately.

My big problem with the wall is it inspires people to put false subtitles on a video of some TV host in Spain talking about his previous career, working in a kitchen.

Well some things have a result others don’t. Also, the rhetoric Trump has used has had a massive impact. The threat of increased security has been impactful. But most (not all) articles I read on potential walls have concluded that the actual impact from the wall would be limited. But I can’t know how true that is.

I have lived in San Diego and before that I visited frequently.

There used to be signs on the highway that goes to Mexico. Beware people crossing. Highly unusual for a 70MPH freeway. The signs were warning people to watch out for "illegal" immigrants who were coming in and might be crossing the road.

Today, those signs are gone and there's a wall. There was no wall then.

I read this yesterday. It's a partisan hit piece (though I agree with much of it anyway) railing against building the wall, but it had this gem in it:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/28/...tml?rref=collection/sectioncollection/opinion

The 1986 law, with its provisions for legalization and increased border enforcement, aimed to correct the problem. Since then, the United States has spent $263 billion on immigration enforcement, much of it along the southern border. These efforts have slowed, but not eliminated, unauthorized entry.

How about instead of deporting when an illegal is arrested just give them death penalty for everything. They cant hide behind constitution cause not citizen. That way either they wont come over illegally or they will be damn sure not to break the law if they do.

When this bullshit first came out about him wanting to build a wall, I read a great article about the cost and how wrong this guy was with his estimates. Saying that the real expensive part will be the maintenance. I also learned that their are huge gaps right now out in the middle of nowhere. Just always assumed there was a solid fence right now, but no way. Miles upon miles out in rugged terrain where there is nothing.

My great grandparents came across that border in the early 1900s..... they settled in Riverside, CA. My great grandfather was the first “wetback” to run and own his business down there. Built up a concrete and construction company and has buildings down there he built on the register of historic buildings. My grandfather and his brothers all served in the Korean War and were civil servants after they retired.
The other side of my family were drunks who came over here legally from Eastern Europe and we’re all pieces of shits who beat there wives and kids.
But as long as this guy thinks he has a plan to make us great again right?

My uncle almost lost both his feet 12 years ago because an illegal from Mexico thought it would be cool to drive another illegal immigrant's car 90 mph zig zagging through traffic on I5. Lost control, went UNDER the cable barrier and plowed into my uncle coming home from a long day of carpet installation.

My uncle's only mistake was that he didn't have coverage on his personal truck that he did on his work truck. It was down with a bad transmission that he was installing himself.

The illegal immigrant had NO coverage of any kind.

My uncle lost everything and couldn't wear shoes for over a year. He's in pain every day of his life.

So my anecdote means I don't give a fuck about your anecdote.

The overwhelming cost of illegal immigration this country is suffering outweighs either one.

Trump is a construction guy. You'd think he'd want to build things.

Keep in mind I have sympathy for your uncle, but it's not like people who are here legally always have insurance.

Your chances of being hit by some dumbass "American" who has no insurance are far greater than being hit by some "illegal" who has no insurance.

They took down the "family" running signs on the highways in SD? I always got a chuckle out of those.

I hadn't seen them the past 7-8 years.

Republicans started building a border wall there in the 1980s or early 1990s.

I think it's a national disgrace.

I could do this too. My brother hired some Russians to remodel his garage.....the same guys came back and broke in and stole a bunch of stuff from him. Do I hate Russians because of this? They flew here son........... Sorry about your family member, but your story don’t float.

That created long lines for visas for countries with large emigration demand (Mexico, India, China and the Philippines)
(from the article Denny posted)

This denotes the real problem. Emigration from countries that can not support their population. Well the US can not do it either.
The US is on track to join this list well before the end of this century. No way should we run to the end of this track.

I go one step further...... my wife was hit by this woman here in our neighborhood a few years ago. Messed her car up. The other woman was a some rich chick from West Linn and had no insurance on her car........ Do i hate rich white women from the suburbs (Acutally I do) so this doesn’t really work. Nevermind.

Really? I swear I saw one there about 3 years ago.

Lord, that was an ignorant post.

With the wall there, I'm not sure where families of immigrants can get through.

I have plenty of Hispanic friends who go back and forth through the border crossing. I'd think that's how "illegals" would get in anymore. By getting a passport and just crossing as a visitor, then never going back.

*I realize that you might have meant the post i was responding to, but you quoted mine so with that said...*

You must mean your post, right? Because

https://www.carinsurance.com/Articl...rage-state-averages-of-uninsured-drivers.aspx

About one in eight drivers on the road in 2015 was uninsured, according to the latest data from the Insurance Research Council (IRC). The nationwide uninsured motorist (UM) rate increased from 12.3 percent in 2010 to 13 percent in 2015. Uninsured motorist rates varied substantially among individual states, ranging from 4.5 percent in Maine to 26.7 percent in Florida.

*

You're telling me that the majority of those who are uninsured in the country are all those damn illegal immigrants?

There are about 200 million licensed drivers in the US (+ or - 10 million). There are about 15 million "illegals" in the US (I know some say 30 million, but I think that's stretching it). I would venture a safe bet that the majority of "illegals" are children (they tend to make up the larger % of them historically). So let's just assume 50% of them are driving, and 100% of those are uninsured. So that's anywhere from 7 (15 million illegals) to 15 million at most (30 million illegals).

And remember, that's assuming that 100% of them who drive, do so uninsured.

Now, let's get to the "Real Americans". As the article above said, they are uninsured at about 13%, which would be about 26 million drivers.

And while I fully accept that there is a new version of math out there, I'm fairly certain that 26 million uninsured "real Americans" is still more than (at the high end) 15 million "illegals".

So, how was this an ignorant post?

The wall is just a distraction, as you're right. Most come by other ways.

I swear I've seen those signs more recently on a trip to San Diego/Southern California. It could be my memory is off.
