What's the consensus for...

which stat (and definition) you use for offensive and defensive efficiency? I'm trying to set up the spreadsheets, and my numbers are jiving with Hollinger's. I'm using the possession definition as the (.44*FTA)+FGA+TO-OReb that I got from Felton, and that works for Hollinger's offensive efficiency, but not the defensive. And if I use the advanced ones (using Oreb% and the .96 factor, among other things), it's way off.

That said, since I do most of my basketball talk here, if most of you use different #'s and def's I'm happy to put those in.

I like PER a lot, but I also look at usage rating to get an idea of the "real" PER.

For defense, Drtg seems to be the most consistent when comparing what I see with my eyes versus what that number tells me. Like Buzz, however, I trust my eyes as much as any statistic.

While it seems to be about the only way to put a stat with defense, outside of steals and blocks, my issue with DRTG is the overall eeffect that a team will have on an individual, and the difficulty separating the two. Just as a quick example, as they were the first team I looked at, while still having a good rating, you see Marcus Camby's rating jump up 6 points since transferring from Denver to the Clippers. Baron Davis hovered between 100 and 104 in NO. 107 in GS. 111 in LA. I suppose the argument coul dbe put forth that their defense has been slipping, but it seems as the teams got worse, their D got worse.
I also can't understand how aguy like Raja Bell will have a simila rdefensive rating to a guy like Steve Blake.
Obviously, no stat is perfect, and I will still use that, but I suppose it goes along with a larger answer to the main question, I don't think you can find one stat alone to use well, there are inherent flaws in all of them.

For defense, I have not found any stat I can trust as much as my eyes. Not even close.
