Now we all have the answers about that bizarre night's events. Here is my story, which will be followed by the news I just read.
After leaving the arena on Wednesday night following the game against the Thunder, the wife and I walked with many other fans East up Multnomah Street to our parking spot at Lloyd Center. On the way, we heard sirens in the distance that quickly became multiple flashing lights drawing closer, accompanied by the sounds of revving high performance engines. At several of the crosswalks, we had to wait as speeding law enforcement vehicles roared by. At one point, several fans tried to cross before police cars could get around the heavy traffic and had to jump back out of the way as they sped through the intersection.
As we continued our trek on this familiar and well-worn path, we saw a large number of siren encrusted vehicles congregating around the base of some large buildings to the South. Before long, an ambulance came zipping out of the milling mass of the mighty metal muscle and headed North (likely towards the Legacy Emanuel Hospital close by). Many fans near us were wondering what in the world was going on and I heard one guy wonder aloud if some kind of an attack was happening with the amount of police vehicles and transit authority vehicles rushing to and fro.
The wife loves true crime and was checking on her phone to see what was happening, but after much searching on the drive home, could not turn anything up. I told her it's probably too soon to read something online.
Today, I decided to ask Google what happened that night and this is what it said:
From Google:
"On November 5, 2025, Portland police activity related to the
Eastside Multnomah Street
area included an incident from the previous night where an armed man was arrested near the intersection of
Northeast Grand Avenue and Northeast Multnomah Street
.
Key details regarding the incident:
Now call me a lunatic if you will (and I know many of you do!), but my theory is that this was an OKC fan who left the arena in his car and decided to exit his vehicle, ditching it near Multnomah street and take celebratory shots with his glove compartment gun to a whole new level. More detail and evidence to follow, but first:
Backstory on this theory: I have an older brother who in the 80's had a friend who was a bit of a loose cannon, kind of literally; he was a fellow house painter and general contractor and the stories he told me of the crazy things this guy would do out of nowhere were quite hilarious and really stuck with me from my youth until now. One such story (which my brother would act out while he was the passenger when driving with me in later years) was a time when my brother was showing off his newly installed stereo system in his little pickup truck that he prided himself on the ability it had to take sound to a very high volume and pure sonic level. His friend loved the tunes and apparently so damn much that he couldn't help himself and began violently hip thrusting toward the ceiling in the cab, while doing air guitar motions and making faces that could only be described as sexual climax agony and ecstacy. My brother would demonstrate this absurd and volatile routine to great comedic effect. Then, this seemingly laid back but wild friend suddenly pulled a .38 revolver from the waistband of his holed and threadbair jeans (of which my brother had no idea of its existence) and started firing shots out the window into the 1980's Summer air. He just loved those killer tunes (I think it was Boston's Foreplay/Long-time song being blasted) so damn much he just lost control and went full whack job/guerilla fighter mode.
So to continue with my theory:
After such an amazing game where we beat the odds and took down his Thunder so righteously, this Oklahoma City transplant couldn't help but embrace the Blazers and commend their tenacity and heart. He frantically shed his embarrassing Tide pod-esque colors, ran through the streets in his birthday suit, swinging his arms and his long-in-the-tooth sack free in the PDX night air and fired off happy shots from his gun (meaning the weapon, not HIS gun, but who knows the extent of his glee?).
We heard a lot of celebrations around us; cheers and much talk about the game, but this man went too far.
The timing of this was too close to just be a coincidence. This had to be a fan and I choose to believe what I now believe.
