So my laptop is on its last days and I need to get a computer for school. I don't wanna get another laptop and I would prefer a PC. Anyone know of any good sites that has cheap computers? I'd prefer to get the whole set... computer, monitor, mouse, keyboard. Keep in mind that I live in Minnesota.. so I'm not sure if any local places in Portland (or wherever you live) will be any help.

No local places would be of any help. If you are buying a whoel computer you can't beat the manufacturers online deals. First of all if going with PC I would go with a Dell over an HP for a home use PC, but either of them will offer good deals. Secondly, if your patient, a lot of times you can find great deals here:

www.slickdeals.net

I check it several times each day because sometimes the offers are only good for hours. For example, several years ago I bought a laptop that was a $3k laptop. With coupons and codes off of slickdeals, I picked it up for $1900.

These days for a desktop computer, unless you are gaming or getting a high end monitor, should only run you a few hundred dollars. Maybe 600'ish at most.

Why not have one made for you. Although they are gone for the summer, my step sons often build nive PC's for people cheap and they use excellent materials. Aside from that, I'd also go with a Dell. Buy quality.

Because if you are getting a whole system then buying one usually doesn't save you much of anything, and you have no warranty. Most folks in school don't have the money to get their computer repaired if shit goes wrong.

Good point.

buy a netbook from amazon.com or even staples. $300. if you play games, then stop.

Check at Frye's too, you can get "older" computers for really cheap. They are maybe 6 months or so behind what's currrent, but more than enough to do what you need for school.

Do not go Dell. Worst customer service ever. Bought a new laptop from there, and my wireless card didn't work and I called them everyday for 3 hours for nearly a week and a half to get them to solve the problem. Long story short, they never believed me it was a hardware issue since it was new when it was, and you have to jump through several hoops to talk to someone who knows what they're talking about. And you will get no refund if you're unsatisfied.

Dell sucks.

I disagree. I have had many Dell computers and had excellent support. On the other side of the coin, I know how to troubleshoot better than most of them, and I know how to get past hurdles, where most folks don't. So I have no idea what it would be like for most end users. There was a period of time where their support was based out of India, but they moved it back.

That's weird. Maybe you have other support numbers, but whenever I call, it's some guy with an Indian accent. Took me about two hours to finally get someone based out of the U.S.

Thinkpads (you can get them only online) are great. I have owned 3.

Also, Best Buy is a good choice.

I've got three myself. I always use one. If you are going to do any heavy thinking, it's best to protect your head with a thinkpad. The only problem with wearing them is that they get awfully hot in the summer.

Get an I-Mac right now and you get a free I-pod touch as well. I just got a 24 inch one, great computer.

Mac's suck. Sorry, but true for me at least.

No forward delete, too expensive, software that doesnt translate well to the platform (i.e. Office), etc.

My bes friend Erik has had a mac and he loves it. I play arond with it when I go to his dorm and I really like certain features about it. But from people I've talked to they all say macs are about looking cool and having cool little features and thats it. They complain that they are much much more expensive then pc's, and that if a part needs to be replaced then it is more difficult to do that in a mac then a pc.

Someone once told me you could get the same $2000 dollar mac in pc form for $1200, then take the extra $800 and just upgrade the parts. idk if thats true but thats what I heard. Thanks everyone for replies

macs are pretty good and I'm a PC guy. Things like searching for files and photos is much faster.....that being said, it much more expensive and if you're a hardcore PC guy who likes to play around and fuck with stuff, the mac can get a little frustrating since everything is dumbed down quite a bit.

movie editing is great on it though.

I usually order through CDW. I used to be dell but they went to shit a few years back, had some real problems with them

Basically the computer will be used for typical school stuff. Research on the internet, papers, stuff like that. Also obviously the internet and surfing the web, and a violent addiction to porn. My Ipod would be connected to it, along with pictures and videos from my digital camera. No video editing just memory for the videos. I occasionally play games, but not really that much.

The only thing that really pushes me away from macs are the price. I know I can get like a decent PC for $500 dollars. Hell the one I'm using now wasn't even $500 and it works awesome. Fast and tons of space, 360GB. But macs are much easier, and in a way funner to use.

That's the thing about Macs. They're higher quality, but you have to pay more.

I use my Mac for school stuff, audio/video editing, and some web development, and it works great. It's great to know that you're computer probably isn't going to die.

I had to reformat my PC every 2 months or so when I used one. The great thing about PC's is there is so much more software out there then there is for a mac. But that same software will kill your PC in a month or two.

So I got a new computer.. a Dell... now here is a new argument for everyone.

I want to protect this puppy but I'm not that great on different types of antivirus or antispyware or antikickyourcomputersassware. So what are the bests? should i just get a antivirus? should i also get a antispyware? recommendations

my school has a deal with mcafee where i can get it for free, like the version you buy. but ive ehard most people say mcafee isn't the best, and it slows down the computer. they say a free version of somethign else is better then that. any ideas?
