‘Like an Experimental Concentration Camp’: Whistleblower Complaint Alleges Mass Hysterectomies at ICE Detention Center

Female detainees at ICDC who in April were able to release a video complaining about the lack of proper medical treatment and poor conditions at the facility.

Several legal advocacy groups on Monday filed a whistleblower complaint on behalf of a nurse at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center documenting “jarring medical neglect” within the facility, including a refusal to test detainees for the novel coronavirus and an exorbitant rate of hysterectomies being performed on immigrant women.

The nurse, Dawn Wooten, was employed at the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) in Georgia, which is operated by LaSalle Corrections, a private prison company. The complaint was filed with the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by advocacy groups Project South, Georgia Detention Watch, Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, and South Georgia Immigrant Support Network.

Multiple women came forward to tell Project South about what they perceived to be the inordinate rate at which women in ICDC were subjected to hysterectomies – a surgical operation in which all or part of the uterus is removed. Additionally, many of the immigrant women who underwent the procedure were reportedly “confused” when asked to explain why they had the surgery, with one detainee likening their treatment to prisoners in concentration camps.

“Recently, a detained immigrant told Project South that she talked to five different women detained at ICDC between October and December 2019 who had a hysterectomy done,” the complaint stated. “When she talked to them about the surgery, the women ‘reacted confused when explaining why they had one done.’ The woman told Project South that it was as though the women were ‘trying to tell themselves it’s going to be OK.’”

“When I met all these women who had had surgeries, I thought this was like an experimental concentration camp. It was like they’re experimenting with our bodies,” the detainee said.

According to Wooten, ICDC consistently used a particular gynecologist – outside the facility – who almost always opted to remove all or part of the uterus of his female detainee patients.

“Everybody he sees has a hysterectomy—just about everybody,” Wooten said, adding that, “everybody’s uterus cannot be that bad.”

“We’ve questioned among ourselves like goodness he’s taking everybody’s stuff out…That’s his specialty, he’s the uterus collector. I know that’s ugly…is he collecting these things or something…Everybody he sees, he’s taking all their uteruses out or he’s taken their tubes out. What in the world.”

Wooten also confirmed that many of the detained women have told her that they didn’t understand why they were being forced to have the procedure, explaining that some of the nurses obtained their consent “by simply googling Spanish.”

The complaint details several accounts from detainees, including one woman who was not properly anesthetized during the procedure and heard the aforementioned doctor tell the nurse he had mistakenly removed the wrong ovary, resulting in her losing all reproductive ability. Another said she was scheduled for the procedure but when she questioned why it was necessary, she was given at least three completely different answers.

“She was originally told by the doctor that she had an ovarian cyst and was going to have a small twenty-minute procedure done drilling three small holes in her stomach to drain the cyst,” according to the complaint. “The officer who was transporting her to the hospital told her that she was receiving a hysterectomy to have her womb removed. When the hospital refused to operate on her because her COVID-19 test came back positive for antibodies, she was transferred back to ICDC where the ICDC nurse said that the procedure she was going to have done entailed dilating her vagina and scraping tissue off. “

Another nurse then told her the procedure was to mitigate her heavy menstrual bleeding, which the woman had never experienced. When she explained that, the nurse “responded by getting angry and agitated and began yelling at her.”

Hm, forcing people to be in cages/camps, and then performing unnecessary sterilization on them?

Where have I heard that before....

Could it be...

saw this this morning, started down the eugenics path but realized the first label that truly fit was mengele. not wanting to offend crandc, because the scale is not the same.

In 1927, the U.S. Supreme Court decided, by a vote of 8 to 1, to uphold a state's right to forcibly sterilize a person considered unfit to procreate. The case, known as Buck v. Bell, centered on a young woman named Carrie Buck, whom the state of Virginia had deemed to be "feebleminded."

It starts small.

And actually, there are several examples of it in our own countries past. Look at how the Indigenous peoples were treated in the country, or how Africans were treated after they were brought here.

@ABM How does one reconcile this information with being pro-life? If the Trump administration has mass hysterectomies occurring under its watch - ending the hopes of these women to have children, is that not as bad as an abortion because the abortion is already a life that is forming whereas a hysterectomy is just removing any chance at life? I remain shocked that anyone pro-life would think Trump is the person to make sure happens. Do people think if Joe Biden is President we will have a massive amount of abortions all of a sudden?

I'm just now hearing about this. Has it been absolutely confirmed conclusive that Trump is behind it?

Unless Trump did the operations himself, and there is video, and audio, and eyewitness accounts, and he admits it under oath...

Nah, that would still be no reason to think he's responsible in any way.

It's real simple.

What a woman wants to do with her own body is bad. What a rich republican white man wants to do to her is good!

Does it matter, when you are talking about responsibility and leadership? Terry Stotts doesn’t tell his team to turn it over, but if they start turning it over 30 times a game, he’s gone. Under Trump, if all these reports are factual, which there is no reason to believe they are not, these monstrosities are taking place. Whether he knows about it or not, either way it shows a massive problem. He doesn’t know something so terrible is happening and we have rouge leadership at the borders removing women’s uteruses or he knows. This is almost beyond belief. I am hoping this isn’t true. But if it is, we are talking about a huge human rights catastrophe that the country is now responsible for.

knows or doesn't know, the buck stops there, right?

Indeed. There's just a lot of misinformation out there....on BOTH sides. While lengthy, I'll read through the link lawai'a sent.

I am aware of Buck v Bell. Stephen Jay Gould later researched. He learned her real "crime" was having an out of wedlock child, apparently raped by an employer's son. This was covering up the rape. He located the child, and her children, and came to the conclusion that there was not one "feeble minded" person in the Buck family.

Glad this was posted, I was going to do so when I finished my baking.

Not only did the woman cited not have heavy bleeding, hysterectomy is not the treatment for heavy menstrual periods; doctors generally prescribe low dose birth control pills to reduce flow and cramps.

The person heading the Office of Refugee Resettlement is, as is usual in the Trump regime, a person with no qualifications who was chosen because of his extreme opposition to legal abortion and birth control. Forced sterilization apparently is OK.

The most pro life administration in history.

Trump will no doubt call it fake news and he knows nothing about it and the buck stops with everyone else.

So you are saying that Bill Gates is running the ICE detention center? :dunno:

Is it October yet?

Further reporting on NBC alleged that two women were told they needed hysterectomies due to cancer. Subsequent exams showed neither had ever had cancer. Also reported women returned from appointments bruised.

Correction on my earlier post. Gould looked up Carrie Buck's sister Doris. Carrie's daughter died in childhood. Carrie and Doris were two of several children their mother had out of wedlock. Her social crime led to her being labeled mentally deficient. After her rape and pregnancy Carrie was institutionalized. Her daughter was labeled feeble minded based on nothing, leading to infamous quote that three generations of imbeciles were enough, and both Carrie and Doris were sterilized. Doris was told she was getting an appendectomy. She later married. She and her husband loved children and lived lifetime of sorrow because they never had children. Not until old age did Doris learn why. Gould interviewed her in a retirement home, where she enjoyed games and activities. Although unsophisticated she was clearly all there mentally. He also found report cards of Carrie's daughter. At that time schools frequently failed students and a C was a respectable grade. She struggled in math but got consistent C's and some B's in other subjects as well as A's in deportment, showing she was an adequate student and we'll behaved child. He therefore concluded not one "feeble minded" person in the family.

Not trying to digress but wanted to correct error in earlier post.

this story is getting some traction. I saw on the news there are reports of at least 17 women having procedures they didn't want. I also saw a report that ICE is working hard to quickly deport the women making the claims. At least one of them has been deported, but there may be a legal momentum to prevent further deportations until there is an investigation

Bond villains always had some redeeming qualities. Trump villains have none

what is the consensus: Is Ivanka hot enough to be a Bond girl?
I can't get past Ivanka's evil qualities. Like a woman who smokes it's a turnoff for me.

One woman who spoke publicly is a native of Cameroon who has lived here since age two, worked, paid taxes, her children are Americans. But she was arrested on misdemeanor larceny and therefore subject to deportation. She has been in custody three years. She was told she would get a minor procedure but instead they removed her fallopian tube. After she spoke out she was suddenly put on a plane for deportation. Two Congresswomen pulled her off at last minute.

The more we know about Trump, the harder and tiring it must be to keep the facade of being an active supporter of his (on a message board, no less).
