Why Critcize?

Why do people criticize other people's choice in music? Everybody is different. They may love one sound, while another may find it annoying, simple, or just trashy.

Now I've been guilty of this plenty of times, but why do we do it? Not everyone is going to like the same things..and if we did, honestly, would that music be considered good? It would all be the same, everything would be boring.

Another thing I don't get. Why do people criticize bands from growing from their roots? Bands, like people, mature over time. If you were to take Staind's independent album, Tormented, and compare it to their new album, Illusion of Progress, the only thing you'd notice was Aaron Lewis' voice.

Any thoughts?

Because some people like certain music/bands because it's the "cool" thing to do, and because everyone else listens to it.

We criticize because we're human, really. For me, honestly I like all genres of music, just not most of the artists and bands. The thing is that I more-so appreciate bands and artists that go further to make things complex and different then anything else. Something that if I were to attempt to replicate it as a musician, it would be very difficult for me to do so. That doesn't mean I don't like simple music though. I admit that sometimes I used to go a bit overboard when comparing other people's music interests to my complex music interests, but I've stopped that over the past year or two and just concentrated on what makes me happy. Overall, I just have a big calm these days and I'm a lot happier. If I don't like the music, I'll avoid it. Simple as that to avoid criticism and hurting someone's else's feelings and/or insulting their interests and opinions. That's an unneeded argument waiting to happen.

I'm very diverse with my music styles, but growing up i didn't listen to top 40 and people laughed at me for that. Why, I don't know. I read reviews, listen to albums, read lyrics and then make judgments. I'll say what i don't like, but i won't criticize your music liking. But if someone says a band sucks and you take offense to that, then you need to check yourself.

I don't mean like...your band sucks and taking offense to that. I'm talking like when people just shred someone for their musical tastes. Like..does it make you feel better about yourself or something?

heh, well if someone likes a type of music that represents certain ideas, feelings, and themes I'll make inferences on a person based on their enjoyment. So for instance if someone really really really loves Lil Wayne and "snap music" then I'm assuming they're the type of person that appreciates style over substance, and judging their affection of superficial priorities.

I know you weren't, but I'm giving my answer from a personal standpoint.

In general, I think some people just think they know better then others. Most because they are young and ignorant and/or rude - others because they are over 30 and have nothing better to do except argue because it sets them off and they like the rush. That's true too, I knew a few people like that.

I criticize because I'm assuming the person doesn't know that there is something better available. I wouldn't criticize people for liking a specific genre, just specific artists/songs.

I criticize because I want to expose people to other things. Music is my passion, and I go out of my way most of the time to give praise to some unknown musician that may "do it better" than your favorite. It's a little arrogant, but life is so boring when it's polished and proper anyways.

One thing I don't understand is why people get offended when they get criticized. Stand your ground, and discuss your opinion if you really care about it. If not, stfu.

...and that's not aimed at anyone. It's just a general observation.

I have my tastes, and I don't like people dissin' my bands. I hope I don't do it to other people either.

Music choices affect everyone in the room in many cases, much like smoking. It's much less harmful than smoke though, but some people act like they're dying if they are exposed to it for more than 10 seconds. The younger you are, music is more of a fashion accessory. You're more impressionable, and you want to fit in. Over the years, people pick up and listen to many different things. They become less sensitive to small deviations in the music. They're not going to get in a fight with you over whether you play track 1 or track 5 of the exact same CD, because it really doesn't matter that much.

Why criticize? You're not going to hurt my feelings, but you end up looking immature doing it. I win.
