Kristi Tolliver, Wizards assistant coach is making only $10,000 a year where everyone else makes double figures. Part of the reason is she plays for the Mystics also owned by Wizards owner Ted Leonsis. Part of the WNBA collective barganing puts a cap on what players can be paid by the team in the offseason.

But, Leonsis seems to be using a loophole to pay her less. The Wizards aren't the Mystics, they are two different teams that share the same owner. She should be paid separately by each.

If you read the article, you'd see that's an unfair characterization.

She was brought in as a professional, and she deserves to be paid like one.

The Wizards agreed. They fought the league’s decision with Toliver, arguing that she should be paid more than the $10,000 the Mystics could allocate for her. The league ruled against them, but Toliver decided to take the job anyway,

They would pay her more if the league permitted them to.

Thanks. Missed the Wizards agreed part. Still, her working as an assistant coach for the Wizards is seperate than working as a WNBA player. The Mystics aren't her offseason employer so there is no reason her payment for coaching should be paid for by that team or under those team rules when she isn't working for them.

Don't even need to read it to know the reason behind it.

The owner could sign LeBron or someone else and sign him as an "assistant" with the Mystic for 300 million a year.

I don't know how likely that would be in the WNBA but the logic is sound

Bodyman's right on this one--if the league permitted the Wizards to compensate her in a manner disparate from how the Mystics can compensate her, it would open up a massive loophole that could allow for simple circumvention of the salary cap. Any team could simply offer to pay a prospective free agent significantly more by offering them a second job with the "other" franchise.

No NBA owner should be allowed to be a WNBA owner.

Since NBA allows women to play, owning a WNBA team amounts to having a private stash of potential players above what other teams have.

The day a woman suits up for an NBA game, that might be a valid concern. Don't see that happening any time soon.

Duh. We all wanted Paul Allen to do this over the years. Wink wink.

There needs to be a way to get around this.
Something like:
  • Wizards give GEICO a rebate on their logo patch expense;
  • GEICO gives Toliver an above-market-value endorsement deal.
I'm sure the league office would never catch on...

She could always quit being a player, just like a male coach would. Then she'd get full pay.

From what I was reading, she makes more as a player than she likely would as a coach.

I think it's already happened, hasn't it?

What!!!! She's a Moron. FYI: What is the difference between a Moron, an Idiot and a Imbecile? The Moron has a mental grade equivalency of 9-12, An Imbecile has the rating of 4-6 years of age and an Idiot needs special supervision as the person cannot rate an age parameter. Geez, that means I was a moron when I was in high school. Sounds about right.

When I was in high school, I forgot I was in high school. That did not bode well.....

Closest I could find was Lusia Harris, who was was drafted by the New Orleans Jazz in 1977, but never played.

That would be too late, with the damage and unfair advantage done.

When I was younger, people didn't hate women so much. They had vision and offered opportunities for women to break barriers, particularly in sports.

In the seventh round of the 1977 NBA draft, the New Orleans Jazz selected Harris with the 137th pick overall. She became the second woman ever drafted by an NBA team, after Denise Long, who was selected by the San Francisco Warriors in the 1969 draft.[20] However, the league voided the Warriors' selection, thus Harris became the first and only woman ever officially drafted.[21] Harris did not express an interest to play in the NBA and declined to try out for the Jazz.[22] It was later revealed that she was pregnant at the time, which made her unable to attend the Jazz's training camp.[23] She was selected ahead of 33 other male players, including the Jazz's eighth round selection, Dave Speicher from the University of Toledo.[24] In a poll on the NBA.com website, she was ranked as the most unusual pick in the history of the NBA draft.

People nowadays have devolved to the point many are subhuman in their public interactions with others.

I cant recall it ever happening.
You need to manly to play in the NBA, remember.

The NBA today is pretty sissied-up compared to most of it's history, and is mostly just a 3pt jump-shooting game.

Dozens of WNBA players would improve most any current bench in the NBA, especially ours.

You must have lived deep in the woods.
