dont remember having this debate in here

why and why not?

asking someone to work 5-20 hours a week for their ebt, free food, and housing seems like a good idea, but am i missing something?

this could be as simple as working at shelters/picking up trash or as complex as staffing entire factories

well thats what im saying, maybe make recipients work a little bit for it? is it a bad idea?

seems pretty fair

i know some people cant work and thats fine, but able bodies full ride peeps could maybe help doing something? anything?

Hmm, yeah..base it upon ability. hell we have a whole department of employment that believes all they have to do is point the unemployed to a computer..lets say they can screen those collection and make determinations based upon ability..could even help transition to full time employment etc etc tec

I'd think the "work" in "workfare" could be daycare.

That would give people ability to go out and get a decent job they couldn't otherwise accept because they don't have the daycare.

that could work too

is this a touchy subject that i dont know about? seems alot of money could be made/saved to help with the deficit

So basically you're advocating a system where people can work menial jobs for government provided housing, food, and services?

is that the issue with it? that it is "communism"?

seems better than just giving money away for nothing

I don't think conservatives advocate them working the job provided by the government for the sake of working. I think they'd rather cut off the benefits and actually force them to look for work.

Lots of potholes to be filled, garbage to be picked up, trees to be planted and pruned, etc., etc.

First, however, I put the prisoners to work. Then the freeloaders.

If you took everyone off of welfare today, then offer it back to them under the condition that they had to work for it. I wonder what percentage of them would agree to it? You know if they need welfare benefits to survive, they'll agree to just about anything. Most of the ones screwing the system would probably be scared away.

those sound like shovel ready jobs!

Yes they should be put to work. Along with shortened timelines for how long they can stay on the service. It isn't communism because they can opt out.

I think in theory its a good idea but in practice it would be a collosal cluster fuck. People dont work hard if they is no direct benifit or incentive to keep working hard. The hardest working people in this scenario would be the ones in charge trying to keep everyone on task.

Also people don't really get what unemployment benifits really are. It is revolution insurance, when people cant work, feed their familys or buy basic necessaties they get pissed off, form groups and start doing uncivil shit. If you keep their bellys full they dont have much motivation for uncivil type shit.

If we could just take the bottom 10% of the population, the mentally ill, the disabled, and the eldery, and get rid of them all . . .this country would be in a lot better financial situation.

You make good points, but there's no incentive to get off welfare at all. I figure if a person does get a job, he (or she) might actually start to care enough to want a bigger pay check.
