Mickelson scoring trend keeps him close

For all of his accomplishments in a Hall of Fame career that has spanned 25 years, there are a few somewhat glaring omissions from Phil Mickelson's résumé.

He has never been No. 1 in the world.

He has never been PGA Tour player of the year.

He has never led the PGA Tour in scoring average.

Piercy shoots 66, shares lead at WGC-Cadillac

Phil Mickelson's scores from Doral over the past two years clearly suggested that the redesigned Blue Monster wasn't completely to his liking.

He had to re-learn a course that he played for more than 20 years, and indicated Thursday that he finally has the new Doral figured out.

Mickelson shot a 5-under 67 on Thursday in the opening round of the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship, the first WGC event of the year. Seeking his first win since The Open Championship in 2013, Mickelson made seven birdies and finished the day one shot back of leaders Scott Piercy and Marcus Fraser.

Rory McIlroy leading in World Golf Championships

Rory McIlroy slipped into the lead of the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship early in Saturday's third round by avoiding the Blue Monster's toothy fourth hole.

Birdies on the par-4 No. 5 and the two front nine par-5s, Nos. 1 and 8, pushed McIlroy to 11-under par after eight holes. As importantly, he parred the par-3 No. 4. Of the top eight golfers on the leaderboard at 3:25, four parred it and four dropped bogeys: 36-hole leader Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson, Paul Casey and Phil Mickelson.

Scott goes two-for-two in the Sunshine State

In his first 40 starts in Florida-based TOUR events from 2000-2015, Scott had one win – but it was a biggie (2004 THE PLAYERS Championship). This year, he’s 2 for 2, winning on consecutive weeks. Not since Tiger Woods in 2001 has a player won back-to-back weeks in Florida. It’s also the first time since Billy Horschel won the final two FedExCup Playoffs events in 2014 that a TOUR winner has won on consecutive weeks.

On the surface, last week’s win at The Honda Classic and this week’s win at Trump National Doral seem somewhat similar. Scott bounced back from a quadruple bogey in the third round last week at PGA National, and had to bounce back from two double bogeys in Sunday’s round.
