Estimates have them being widly available by 2025, but some companies are working on cheaper technology that would allow their introduction in as little as three years.

They are expected to be significantly more safe than human driven cars. Assume you were shopping for a new car and the prices were somewhat close, would you buy a self driving car?

man, I am still waiting for my damn jet pack, flying car and all thestuff that was promised..hey! We as a nation dont even have a space program any more, should I give up free will to a car? I dont think so
 
Yes, I would love that. But what if it starts taking you to some random place you didn't want to go to? There would have to be some kind of overdrive capability. Think of how many lives would be saved by something like that. Unless, of course, they all turn on us and attack like the Decepticons.

Seems to more likely it just becomes a built in excuse.

That'd be great for a long road trip, but I genuinely enjoy driving... I didn't know it had become a chore.
 
That would be like buying a robot to have sex for me or to eat dinner for me.

I prefer to live my life, rather than observe it being lived by machines.
 
Never. If I get myself into an accident, I want it to be because I was the one who made an error, not some software engineer. This will probably be another of those things that the kids of the future will mock me for.
 
I'm assuming it would be sensors in the roadbed or GPS. I'm old-school. I really enjoy driving. It would be nice for long trips and for truckers, as an option, but not something I'd use to drive to work.

No, they actually use a ton of cameras and software to interpret everything.

Have you ever been the victim of an accident? I was completely stopped at a light on a street where the speed limit was 35 and got rear ended hard enough to push my car into the one in front of me (no sex jokes, please). Everyone was okay, but I bet this occurrence happens hundreds of times a day and obviously some have worse consequences than just having to deal with insurance companies and body shops. I think that if it saves more lives in the long run, it would be worth it.

I just can't imagine not driving my own car how I please.

It's really interesting to see them driving around down here.

A friend of mine had a funny experience with one...

My friend was at a corner waiting for somebody, not ready to cross the street yet. The self-driving car detected this and stopped in it's lane to let them cross the street. Meanwhile the regular cars kept whizzing by in the other lanes, but the self-driving car would not budge. My friend looked at the person in the self-driving car and they both started laughing because of the miss communication and the car not being able to properly detect the context.

That would be badass! I didn't realize these were so far along. Hell yeah I'd do it. I'd imagine they have a manual mode if
you want to do the driving but that self drive would save tons of hours of time every day.

Drinking and riding would be great! How would drivers licenses work? There'd be no reason to have a test or wait until your 16 if you stay in automatic mode. In a few years I could remove the manual mode from my old parents.

I'd probably look at buying a van or something where I can cook breakfast and shave while riding to work.

You've totally blown my mind I'm going to start shopping for this now.

trial runs are only legal in CA, NV, and FL
