Yankees back-up plan for 2B

Cashman is looking into a back-up plan in case Cano isn't resigned.

This article says they are looking at Phillips from Cincinnati (unrealistic) and Omar Infante from Detroit (plausible).

Also, it says "Cashman is going to be calling around on a lot of guys, just to take the temperature of agents and fellow GMs."

Best solution for 2 base is to get Cano back at a reasonable rate. Per MLB I hears that Phillips is owed about 55 mil and the Reds would want some prospects.

Prospects?...hmmmm. Do they want prospects who can actually play, or just lukewarm, filler bodies to make the deal? Yankees can handle the latter just fine - the former? That's gonna be a problem.

I like Phillips as a player, dude hustles but from what I heard on MLB network he honked off Reds ownership and the order I guess is to get him out of Dodge. I don't think the Yankees have any prospects that the Reds would want, our team is going to have to buy replacements until the farm is better and with Cashman as Corporate Buyer I am not confident.

...considering that he's on the back end of his career, I don't think the Reds are in a high leverage situation if they really want to move Phillips, especially since everyone already knows he and the Reds' management are at odds....he's been a good player but he'll be 33 half way through next season with 4 more years to go on his contract and he's still due $50 Mil.
...the Reds may see this as a good opportunity to shed themselves of a player who may only have a couple of good years left in him anyway...and they may be dreading the last 2 years and $27 Mil of Phillips' contract...another example of why it's unwise to give out 10 year contracts.



...I just don't see someone giving up top shelf prospects for Phillips...yeah, they can ask for them but it doesn't mean they'll actually get them.

They have to have a back up plan. Cano is not the type of player who wants to play for a team and retire like Mo did. He will follow the money and his agent Jay Z. I just hope the Yankees don't get stupid with him like they did Arod. Keep Hank locked in a padded cell during negotiations.

I doubt that'll happen... it'll either be Cano gets a deal with the Yankees that is far too long (7 or longer) or Yankees brass holds the line and he signs elsewhere for that contract... He's gonna get the years from someone... I just hope the Yankees aren't stupid enough to give it to him... and I absolutely agree, they need to have a back-up plan
