DALLAS — Racing to see his dying mother-in-law at a Plano hospital, an NFL player found himself delayed by a Dallas officer after he was stopped in the emergency room parking lot.

With his wife and another woman in the car, Ryan Moats — a running back for the Houston Texans — sped his car toward the hospital early on March 17. But when Moats arrived at the parking lot, they were stopped by Officer Robert Powell.

Dashcam video from the Dallas officer's patrol car captured the incident.

"Get in there," Officer Powell yelled out to Tamishia Moats, Ryan's wife, as she exited the car. "Let me see your hands. Get in there. Put your hands on the car."

"Excuse me; my mom is dying," Moats said.

MOATS: "I've got seconds before she's gone, man."

POWELL: "Listen: If I can't verify you have insurance..."

MOATS: "My mother-in-law is dying!"

POWELL: "Listen to me."

MOATS: "Right now, you're wasting my time."

POWELL: "If you can't verify you have insurance, I'm going to tow your car. So, you either find it or I am going to tow the car."

As they argued, the officer got irritated.

POWELL: "Shut your mouth. Shut your mouth. You can either settle down and cooperate, or I can just take you to jail for running a red light."

No compassion was indicated in the police recording of the incident. "I can screw you over," Officer Powell said. "I would rather not do that. You obviously will dictate everything that happens; and right now, your attitude sucks."

The hospital twice sent nurses to try and get the officer to release Moats.

"We're blue-coding her for the third time," a nurse said on the police videotape.

A Plano police officer stopped to make a plea for the officer to let Moats go. "Hey, that's the nurse," the Plano officer said. "She says the mom is dying right now, and she wants to know if I can get him up there."

Finally, after a 20-minute delay, the officer ticketed Moats for running a red light.

By the time Moats made it up to the emergency room, his mother-in-law was dead.

"I went up after she passed and held her hand, but she was already gone," Moats said in a telephone interview.

Yup, I hate cops that much more now.

Hundreds of thousands of policemen and for the sake of a small handful of ones who are dopes, they are all hated.

And these same people are the first to beg for police help when they need it.

Stupid ass hypocrites.

Ya, I was about to post this here, and did post it in the NFL Forum. Anyway, This is sad, interesting to see what comes out of this.

Did I say I hate all cops? No.

Did I say all cops are bad? No, in fact there was a good cop in this story who tried to plead with the other officer to let the guy go so he could see his dying mom.

Was this one being an asshole? Absolutely, but a cop being a asshole isn't like you, or I, or Duckman being an asshole as none of us has any real power while someone like this cop can stop a man from seeing his dying mom seconds before she's gone for good.

Lol Duckman is always the example for everything.

Detectives are actually the dicks, aren't they? ;)

And I do not disagree that this officer was wrong. However, on the other hand, I wonder how many lines policemen get about this type of stuff. Should they give in and always believe?

Terrible story. That officer should be fired. He clearly is not a good officer of the law. I also think that the PD should be held liable for this, and I hope the Moats family seek some sort of compensation. I know that doesn't bring back his wife's mother, but they deserve something.

That said, here is another story about the police from last weekend that I didn't see posted on this board. Most people don't have to deal with criminals on a daily basis, so I don't expect every police officer to be able to handle the incredible pressure of the job.

Parolee in Police Shootings Linked to Rape

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Oakland police say the parolee who killed three Oakland police officers and left a fourth brain-dead had been linked by DNA evidence to a rape the day before the shootings.
Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason has confirmed a report on the San Francisco Chronicle's Web site that DNA from an unsolved rape in Oakland earlier this year matched that of Lovelle Mixon.

Investigators got that information Friday, the day before Mixon opened fire on officers following a routine traffic stop.

If I were the NFL player I would put a hit out on that cop. or at least send some hard hittin' thugs over.

Yup, I hate cops that much more now.

Show me a person who makes an ignorant response such as this, and I'll show you a person who probably isn't the most law abiding citizen.

I'm always reminded in situations where I see someone say "I hate Cops", about a dude I once saw...ironically on the Cops television show. He was pleading with an officer to not be arrested after a traffic stop had shown him to be in possesion of drugs. His reasoning for not being arrested? He had turned his life around and hadn't been arrested for a few years. He wasn't hurting anyone....Blah blah blah.

The thing I found most interesting is the idea that having not been arrested for a few years was obviously a huge accomplishment for this fellow, and he was offering that up as an example of how good of a citizen he was. I thought to myself how my life is so different from other peoples. If I had ever been as much as detained in the back of a police car for breaking the law, for even a few minutes, I'd be so embarrassed and ashamed I'd never share that with anyone. However this guy was really impressed with himself that he hadn't been arrested in a few years.

So I guess my point is this....

Do good human beings even have a reason to hate cops?

Maybe you should take a look in the mirror, and ask yourself that.

I'm not talking about letting someone get away with murder, I'm just saying that officers should have a little compassion and awareness of what is going on around them. Most officers have that, and some don't, unfortunately it's the ones that don't that make the headlines

Yeah, cops are great for giving directions.

Yeah, cops are great for giving directions.

I guess I miss the humor in this statement, but that probably speaks more to me than you.

I'll add to the "cops suck" bandwagon that seems to be rolling lately with this....

The rules of life are clearly posted, if you break those rules you really have no one else but yourself to blame. Have some self awarness and realize if you get a speeding ticket, ya it sucks, but the rules were posted. If you have an ounce of marijuana on you, and you run a red light, the rules have been posted. If your in public and obviously over intoxicated, the rules have been posted. Very few times does someone come in contact or is arrested by a police officer that hasn't done something wrong. The officer in this story was in the wrong, but to make blanket statements about hating cops is ridiculous and stupid.

And you all can continue on with the cops suck mentality, perhaps that's just you being cool on the internet with your buddies. But listen, I have young daughters that mean the world to me, and I have nothing but admiration for people who's job it is to protect them when they leave my house daily.

I know this was brought up earlier, but when you roll your car taking a curve at 60 mph, you cop haters are the first people thrilled that an officer is there to pull your ass out of the car. However, when you take that curve at 60, and are lucky enough not to kill yourself, but get a ticket for speeding, you're the first people to "hate cops".

Take some accountability for being a dick, and stop blaming police officers for protecting the rest of society from you....

Its my assertation that there are too many cops, many of them are useless traffic enforcers. Like I stated, they are good for giving directions. The blind respect given to them is pretty overrated in my mine. While I believe that having a police force is useful, the extent of their actual contributions is vastly overrated.

Look at this fucking joke of a cop in this article. Multiply it by hundreds of thousands. A police force is necessary but the amount that is out there doing nothing is pretty mindboggling.

The officer in this story was in the wrong. Not wrong to pull a person over for running a red light, but wrong for not allowing him to go when he got the story. I'm willing to bet he'll pay some sort of price for his obnoxious behavior and the negative publicity he's brought his department.

The amount of officers on the streets "doing nothing" is "mind boggling" until an officer is needed. I conuldn't give you the statistic, but response time to an emergency call is remarkably quick, if we didn't have as many officers on the road that would become an issue. We all want an officer at our house in minutes when we need him, but are frustrated that there are so many enforcing traffic laws in their down time, when emergency assistance isn't needed.

Yes, the traffic enforcement is frustrating, when you're breaking a traffic law. You look at it this way, I look at it another. My daughters walk home from school. Everytime a person is pulled over in a school zone speeding by an officer just siiting there waiting for that infraction, I'm happy to think that hopefully he's deturing that person from the next time he wants to recklessly endanger my child.

Again, I'll get back to my original point. Those of us who aren't disobeying laws, usually don't even notice the amount of officers sitting along side the roads waiting to catch a speeder.

If I read this correctly, they were at the entrance to the parking lot. I simply would have left my car where it was and went to the emergency room. The cop could do what he wished with my car. If he tried to detain me, I'd simply run to the hospital doors and dare him to stop me.

I'd happily spend a few nights in the slammer and have my car towed to say goodbye to a dying family member.

I don't really notice them to be honest, but the amount out there are rediculous. I guess usually I'm thinking about meter maids, which are basically along the same scale as traffic cops to me.

OAKLAND, Calif. - As the city prepares for a massive public funeral for four police officers slain in the line of duty, dozens took to the streets in a show of support for the man authorities say was their killer.

Organized by International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement, the march Wednesday evening took participants near a police substation within sight of the two locations where Lovelle Mixon allegedly shot the veteran officers before being slain himself.

Loved ones and supporters walked through the streets chanting, "OPD you can't hide, we charge you with genocide!" There were no officers patrolling the march route.

"I don't condone what he did, but it's bringing to light the frustrations between the community and the police," said Uhuru Movement member Kihad Deen. "This gives people a chance to speak their minds."

Mixon's cousin, Dolores Darnell, 26, addressed the small crowd, calling him "a true hero, a soldier."

"This is the real Lovelle," she said, holding a picture of a smiling Mixon with his wife. "We do apologize for what he did to the officers' families. But he's not a monster."

Authorities say a day before the shooting the 26-year-old fugitive parolee was linked by DNA to the February rape of a 12-year-old girl who was dragged off the street at gunpoint.

I cant express how much this story and the people in it piss me off.

Fuck you Dolores Darnell you ignorant ghetto motherfucker!

In defense of Oakland, few people showed up that vigil and the ones that did were from some cult or something called Uhuru Movement.

The fine people in Oakland did hold a vigil for the fallen cops and several hundereds showed up for that.

At Oakland police headquarters, so many cards, flowers and prayer candles had been left at the side entrance that people coming in and out of the building had to squeeze past the condolences.

Why is there a movement behind this person?

If anyone hasn't noticed, I feel so strongly about this subject, as my father has been a police officer for 25 years. Him and a few of the other department members, on their off day today, will be driving down to Oakland to take part in the funeral prosession tomorrow. This is totally on their dollar, and only to show support for the fallen officers. I'm really not trying to target anyone with my rage against "people who hate cops", but I see the other side. I see my father who works his ass off to take care of people on a daily basis, who loves his job and who loves doing the right thing. yes their are officers who let the power go to their heads, but I really do believe it isn't as many as some may think. A lot of officers get rage from people for doing nothing more than trying to protect them. They don't have the option of who or what calls they respond to, and they are required by law to give service to everyone in need. It becomes frustrating for me to read a guy say "I hate cops", when I very well know he someday may need the service he rails against. Will he appreciate it then? Yes, absolutely. I really think the ignorance needs to stop, and the self awareness needs to prevail. We as a people need to stop with the self importance as if society needs to fit into our daily lifes, and realize we are a small clog and we need to fit into society. Unfortunately a strong police force is needed in todays world, as we saw in Oakland this week. I wish it didn't have to be that way, as that would mean as a people we would have succeeded. This just isn't the case, I just think maybe we need to have a little more admiration for what these officers do for us.

I think certain areas with high crime should have the military, not the police patrol them. Yes, I'm talking about the ghetto. The ghetto...talkin' bout the ghetto!

I feel ya...Cops doing their job correctly isnt newsworthy (duh). There are millions of interaction between cops and civilians every day. What do we get in the news...maybe 1 or 2 badly conducted encounters a month??? Im sure their is much more shadyness in other professions...but cops have guns. People being power hungry in other professions dont.

I love my cop friend...he lied for me so I didnt have to get my tint removed :ghoti:
