I look over our roster, and one question keeps haunting me: Who is going to guard LeBron, Kawhi, Giannis, Simmons, George, Butler.....?
There are all these long, athletic, strong wings in the league and our current plan seems to be to throw Bazemore and Hood at them. This is the downside of letting Aminu and Harkless go. I'm on board with the change, but it's a really significant shift.
Portland is kind of zagging while the rest of the league zigs. We had switchable 6-8 guys and let them go. I guess the thinking is that all our front court size will make up for it. As long as they aren't dunking, does it matter if these big athletic wings are shooting over somebody around 6'6 and 200lbs as opposed to the 6'8 220lb guys we used to have? It sounds reasonable, but I'm not so sure.
We're undersized but have really good shooting at 1-3.
We're oversized but have kind of crummy shooting 4-5 (relative to modern NBA bigs).
I think we'll be ok if we can get our front court set up on defense, but if it becomes a track meet there will be a lot of dunking on us. Which is interesting given how much we are hearing about them pushing the pace this season.
Hezonja is the one NBA vet with the size and strength to play with these guys. If I had to pick one guy to leapfrog everybody and force his way into the starting position over Hood (who I think is the presumptive starter for now) by December, I think I might pick Mario.
