Carmona, Garko lead Indians to sweep of Tigers

<h3>CLEVELAND 5, DETROIT 3</h3>DETROIT (Ticker) -- Fausto Carmona and the Cleveland Indiansshowed they can play with the Detroit Tigers.

Carmona pitched seven solid innings and Ryan Garko hit athree-run homer in the first inning as the Indians completed athree-game sweep of the defending American League-championTigers with a 5-3 victory on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Carmona held one of the majors' best hittingteams to just three runs and nine hits in seven innings to earnhis sixth straight win for Cleveland, which went just 6-13against Detroit last season but held the potent offense to 10runs in the series while taking a 2 1/2-game lead in the ALCentral.

The converted reliever got the bad taste out of his mouth fromthe last time he took the mound against the Tigers. Therighthander allowed a walk-off two-run homer to Ivan Rodriguezin a 4-3 loss on August 5.

Carmona, who was 5-0 with a 1.94 ERA in his previous six starts,got some early run support as the Indians jumped all overTigers starter Mike Maroth (3-2) in the first inning.

Garko hit a 0-1 fastball to left for a three-run homer - hisseventh of the season - which put Cleveland up 4-0 as it senteight men to the plate.

Casey Blake gave Carmona an insurance run when he hit a solohomer in the fifth - his seventh of the season - for theIndians, who have won four straight.

Gary Sheffield and Craig Monroe each had two hits and drove in arun each for Detroit, which came into the game hitting .306with runners in scoring position - the best in the baseball.However, they missed opportunities all night, stranding ninerunners.

Detroit, which leads the major's with 190 extra-base hits, gotthe first two runners on in the sixth, but Carmona got SeanCasey to hit into a double play and got Carlos Guillen to lineout to end the threat.

In the seventh, Brandon Inge led off with a double toright-center, but with two out and runners on the corners,Carmona got Ordonez to hit a weak comebacker to end the threat.

Detroit, which failed to hit a homer for the first time in 15home games, also wasted a leadoff double by Granderson in thefifth.

Rafael Betancourt allowed a two-out double to Casey and a singleto Omar Infante in the eighth, but struck out Brandon Ingeswinging to end the threat. Joe Borowski pitched a scorelessninth to earn his 17th save in 19 tries.

Maroth (3-2) recovered nicely after the rough first inning. Heallowed just two walks before giving up Blake's blast. Therighthander allowed five runs and six hits in eight innings todrop his second consecutive start.

After the Indians struck early, Maroth settled down and allowedjust one run in the next seven innings.

"It was great to get out of the gate early," Garko said. "It<div class="pre">sent the tone for the rest of the game. It was really the ones</div>we got off of Maroth. He settled down and pitched pretty wellthe rest of the way."

"It was one bad pitch, a changeup up in the zone," Maroth said."It put us down four and put a lot of pressure on our offense.At least, I was able to come back and go deep into the game.That gave us a chance to win."

 

I predict Roy, Oden, Aldridge, Chris Paul will be All Stars this year.
