#1 reason is that WE don't want Richardson. And since we have the Raef contract we pick the player, not the other way around. Also: they recently traded for Richardson, so they would be more reluctant to move him now, I think. Also, Richardson is a legit #1 scoring option in a way that Wallace is not. Richardson can score from anywhere on the floor, can play with the ball or off the ball. Wallace is a secondary type scorer. Also, see Minstrel post above. Of course, I prefer our roster if the deal were Frye and Raef for Wallace and Carroll. But, if they insisted on adding Morrison/Pick for Travis/Kopponen it does cause a problem at backup PF for us. I would point out our roster would look a little different than what you have above. Blake, Sergio - (Roy) Bayless Roy, Rudy - (Bayless), Carroll G. Wallace, Webster - (Roy), Batum, Morrison (Carroll) LMA, Diogu - (G. Wallace), Randolph Oden, Prz - (Diogu), (Randolph) You forgot Randolph. And Wallace played a lot of 4 last season. So, backup 4 could be by committie if Diogu didn't excel or in case of injury. And like Travis at the 4 for us last season, Wallace could play the 4 in a small ball unit.
Good points on Richardson. No, I didn't forget Randolph or Morrison, I just don't see them being realistic parts of the rotation, and I don't like the idea of having to go small in the second unit. Just off the top of my head, Houston, Utah, Boston all have second string bruising PFs who would kill the Blazers. Here's another try (honestly, this is all unrealistic, but just for fun) http://games.espn.go.com/nba/featur...016~1026&teams=22~30~30~30~22~18~22&te=&cash= for Malik Rose, who maybe isn't capable of being a backup 4 anymore. and another, assuming NY really wants to get rid of salary that doesn't expire next season http://games.espn.go.com/nba/featur...26&teams=22~22~18~30~30~30~22~18~22&te=&cash= and because I'm a trade machine addict, here's another one http://games.espn.go.com/nba/featur...ms=22~14~30~30~30~18~18~22~14~18~22&te=&cash= Knicks get rid of their only contracts with 3 years left, freeing up cap space for LeBron. The Heat get, on paper, a talent upgrade from Haslem to Randolph (remember, this is the team that won a title with Antoine Walker.) In Carroll they get the 3-point specialist to finally replace Kapono and the injured James Jones. Charlotte gets Frye, who was successful under Larry Brown before and should complement Okafor, Outlaw, and saves some money. For the Blazers, it's a no brainer. They can throw in picks, Freeland, and/or Koponen to whoever wants more.
Me too, but....can we give them Isiah Thomas as guest GM for just one day? Please? Throw in some of Paul Allen's Cash™ ? Seriously, is it really a deal-breaker?
How many NBA GMs do you talk to? I'm guessing it's the exact same number as me... you don't add any weight to your opinion with that stuff. And this isn't most rosters, it's the 2008/9 Bobcats. I'm of the opinion that with EO and dreck at the Big spots, they will continue to lose the battle inside whether Wallace is on the team or not. And though it's only your guess as to whats what, I'm fine with being in the minority here on an opinion. This has happened often in the past and IMO at least I've been proven right at a rate that gives me comfort going against the grain. Feel free to list what I've been proven wrong on. At 6'8.75 barefoot Emeka is a different player then Joel. He's decently coordinated and has some skills, but whenever I see him going against the better 5s in the league he just seems small. While neither he or JP are anything great on offense (at the high or low post), I believe they'd be very complementry on the other end. Defending the paint and controlling the boards is paramount in my view of winning play from Bigs. On offense I'd have them setting picks for the Bob's many jump shooters and scrapping for points and offensive boards. EO has some post skills and better hands so I'd see them sending him to the low block more. I like Frye as a prospect for them as well, it's your utter disregard for Joel as a potential player for them that I've taken issue with. And if I'm them, I'd rather have Joel. A quality defensive 5 is a valuable commodity. I thought it was telling that the teams that made a run at Joel in Free Agency were Detroit and San Antonio. starting 5s with reasonable contracts grow on trees I guess. this is bordering on a complete strawman. And why is prize in quotes? Geez... it wasn't me who shit in your Cheerios this morning dude. I don't know why you're being so dense here but no trade gives them cap relief RIGHT NOW. Why do you focus only on Travis throughout this post as I listed his name only once in an either/or with (your guy) Martell. Are you saying Joel and Martell is NOT a gold plated prize package too? Basically I threw in one of Portland's SFs as a stop gap guy for them as they transition to whoever is their choice. to answer your RFA question... I don't value SR, CF, or MW that much. If Sergio, Frye, and/or Martell have stepped up their play enough to be warranted a tough decision, thats a good thing. Personally I'm doubting whether any of the three get an offer in the next few weeks... maybe Frye. Anyone who doesn't isn't likely to be retained past this season unless they completely blow up tis season. STOMP
Well, Rodriguez had his option picked up. I think the team will consider extending him next off-season if he has a good season, even if he doesn't blow up.
I think we have a lot of players, and a move to quality would be great. Raef and CF with either TO or MW works for me in a New York second. That gives us a star at SF. It thins our roster a bit. And while both Trout and Webster may develop into starter-quality players, neither is there yet. While there are disadvantages to losing either, the roster is deep enough to compensate whichever one was lost. I would be opposed if the deal meant giving up any of the big 3, the Spaniards, or Joel. iWatas
I hadn't realized they picked it up yesterday. Thats a credit to his work this past summer. Good for him... I hope he continues to show well. I misspoke including Sergio with the others. His contract situation is different then those of Martell and Frye who need to be resigned now to avoid counting big time against their potential cap space next off season. Sergio will be at their contractual position next off season where they could choose to resign him without a blowup cap figure attached. Thats probably what you meant all along... anyone know when this exact date is that Frye and Martell are up against? STOMP
I misspoke. Meant financial cashflow relief. But, then you probably knew that, and were just looking for reason to make a personal attack. Nice. Good one. I don't eat Cheerios.
yeah, thats me Mr. Personal Attack. Time to take a look in the mirror and read what you wrote. The previous post I responded to was filled with condescending snide remarks as well as the same impossible contention of a deal providing financial relief this season you'd made the post prior. The 2nd time was with caps as if I were not catching on to an obvious point... it's not my fault for misinturpreting some misspeak of yours when you're repeating it while looking down your nose. I was out of town when this thread happened, but I read through it and wanted to toss in my thoughts. Larry Brown factor. Larry Brown tends to love his players for the first part of his coaching tenure and then he seems to want to rebuild things before the team succeeds. He's already stated he wants Wallace to stop gambling on defense so much... whether that's an indication of him already tiring of Gerald or not is unclear to me. Charlotte's needs. Charlotte has reportedly been VERY unhappy with May's conditioning. They have almost nothing at the power forward spot. They also have a reputation of being a very cheap. Getting out from under Wallace's significant contract while adding pieces that will help? It seems like it would make sense for the Bobcats. Upgrade for Portland? I like Webster, and I hope he's a Blazer for a long time. He's not a championship-level starter at this point of his career, though. Gerald Wallace is five years older, and at 26 is both mature enough to help now and young enough to help for years into the future. He expends a lot of energy on defense and he's an efficient shooter. I think he'd be a great fit. At what cost? I don't know if Raef and Frye would be enough to get Wallace. Adding in a first and some seconds might not be enough, either. Personally, I'd do a Raef + Frye + Outlaw for Wallace (plus contracts, bad if needed) deal... Ed O.
I don't see Raef and Frye as being enough either....I'm still partial to Charlotte possibly dealing Wallace and Felton to Minnesota for a package involving maybe McCants, Brewer, Collins, Craig Smith and a 1st Round pick is more appealing. If Portland needs a 3 point shooter tho spread the floor...maybe they can talk to Minnesota about Miller...he might be available soon
And frye is better?...wow. It's really not that far fetched...Charlotte wants McCants and Brewer is a nice young player at a low price. Smith adds interior strength and scoring and Collins is 6.5mil in cap space and any rebuilding team likes draft picks...keep in mind this is just a quick deal being thrown out there. Actually thinking more into it I see this deal more likely to go down. Minnesota trades: McCants, Miller, Collins & a 1st rounder Charlotte trades: Wallace, Felton & either Morrison or May (since Charlotte looks like they can't wait to unload either one)
Yeah, well, this was a Pre-Season idea.I didn't know Frye was going to suck balls this season. And I thought with a decent showing and being good while under Larry Brown in NY as a rookie, they would value Frye. Now, I doubt they would value him much, so the deal would have to be tweaked.
his 3p shooting has improved since this thread started. not really any worse that batum or rudy this year. it could actually be more of a weapon than anyone has said.
