Perhaps the restructured deal is for more than one year, in which case the Blazers may have next season to evaluate him as well. It would make sense for both parties. Greg's agent isn't going to want him on the market as an UFA next summer without having something in the way of significant court time for Greg to show that he's worth a big multi-year contract.

OK, forget what I just said. I just read the news release that it's a one-year contract.

It looked like the Cavs and Boozer agreed to restructuring their deal. Though I'm pretty sure NBA contracts cannot be renegotiated or restructured.

With the boneheads the Blazers have running the team, not only can they, but they probably will. People saying dumb things on the web, like advocating a max deal for Oden, is one thing, but PDX management turns dumb ideas into reality.

I give up. It's over. Roy and Oden are done and it's time to move on.

Good thing we have a good FO to lead us out of this mess.

    Kill me now.

I don't know the particulars of the Boozer deal, but here at least, there was no contract to renegotiate. The Blazers had submitted a QO in order to ensure that Oden would be a RFA. His agent indicated that Greg was going to sign it, but I never saw that a deal was consummated. There's nothing in the CBA that I'm aware of that prevents a player from accepting a contract for less that the QO. I suppose that Greg was technically a UFA for the few minutes between the time the Blazers rescinded the QO and Greg actually signing a new contract at a lesser amount, but now he's no longer a FA since he's signed a new deal.

    Free agency controversy

After the 2003–04 NBA season, the Cavaliers had the option of allowing him to become a restricted free agent, or keeping him under contract for one more year at a $695,000 salary. The Cavaliers claimed to have reached an understanding with Boozer and his agent on a deal for approximately $39 million over 6 years, which he would have signed if they let him out of his current deal.

Cleveland then proceeded to release him from his contract making him a restricted free agent. During this period, the Utah Jazz offered Boozer a 6-year, $70 million contract that Cleveland chose not to match due to salary cap considerations.[9]

Carlos Boozer signed with Utah on July 24, 2004.[10]

Boozer denied that he made any commitment to the Cavaliers: "There was no commitment. It's unfortunate how the turn of events went through the media," Boozer said shortly after signing the deal with Utah. "I'm not a guy that gives my word and takes it away. I think I've made that clear."[11] Boozer's agent, Rob Pelinka, subsequently ceased representation, although Pelinka has resumed representing Boozer as of July 2009, when he was eligible for another contract extension.

In addition, former Cavaliers owner Gordon Gund has said, "In the final analysis, I decided to trust Carlos and show him the respect he asked for. He did not show that trust and respect in return."[12

Can't you negotiate contracts even after offering the QO? It's possible they just offered Oden a year deal for less and Oden just took it.

Yeah. It's possible Boozer would sign with the Cavs, too.

The thing is, why does Oden want to cut a deal that pushes off his UFA status by a year and at less money than he'd get by taking the QO? He's gambling on the team offering the QO again next summer, after he may not play (or play well) this season.

It's still 2007 right? We just won the lottery and we're about to take Durant.

Oden has once-in-a-generation ability for a center, tremendous size, athleticism, dedication and intelligence. I'm pretty sure we're taking Oden.

Since it's a one-year deal, it doesn't push off his UFA status by a year. He'll still be an UFA next summer and the Blazers will still have Bird Rights on him. As for his taking less money, the Blazers could have simply rescinded their QO and left Greg to try to find a contract that paid more than whatever it is the Blazers ended up offering him. Not many teams have the cap space or would be willing to take him on a multi-year deal without seeing if he's going to be able to play. Additionally, if the Blazers had done that, there wouldn't be any team with Bird Rights on him, meaning that he'd have lost out on a potential additional $26 million on his next contract, IIRC. Taking a lesser amount was his best option.

If he didn't I would think he'd come out and say no.

The $9M was only guaranteed if the Blazers left it out there for Greg to sign. They could have rescinded the QO once they got the results of his medical tests.
