It sucks. I know that we're supposed to dig it. But, c'mon. Saying Scarface is your favorite movie (or a good movie) is more tired than Kobe vs. LeBron debates. The movie is not good. People claim it's good because they are sheep. A certain demographic is supposed to dig it. I don't. And, I won't. I'm too smart for that. The movie has aged very poorly. The plot is thin. The acting is atrocious... and even laughable at critical moments. You agree?
i don't think I've watched the whole thing though. haha..reminds me about the family guy/godfather thing
I watch many movies multiple times. Scarface is ENTERTAINING. Just not good. I find it humorous now. I like it less and less. The last two times I've seen parts of it, I've noticed just how atrocious it really is. Part of that is probably because I didn't watch it from the beginning and the individual bad scenes were more obvious. (Someone could make an argument that individual scenes is not a good way to judge a movie.) But, that still wouldn't sway my opinion that the movie has aged poorly... is poorly done. With several poor acting performances and numerous gimmicks that fail from the director.
That's the problem right there. You thought you were supposed to dig it . . . What gave you that idea?
It's great for unintentional comedy. The way it takes itself so seriously despite being over-the-top ridiculous always entertains me. One of my favourite parts is when Tony gets married and then drags the entire congregation to look at this chained tiger stuck on an island. Then they just point and laugh at it, while crappy 80's music plays in the background. I still have no idea what that scene was about.
I've only seen Scarface once, and I have to agree there wasn't that much there to make me want to watch it again. I just watched Casino again last night. Man, that's a great movie. BTW--Oliver Stone (who wrote Scarface) seems to be just getting worse and worse. Has the guy made a great film since Natural Born Killers? He's like the anti-Clint Eastwood. The older he gets, the more shallow and obvious he gets.
That's an interesting juxtaposition. I think as overrated Scarface is, Casino is underrated. I watched it last night too (I saw it on HBO). The problem with Casino is that it bore so many similarities to Goodfellas, arguably the greatest mob movie ever. Same director, same narrative style, roughly the same story arc, DeNiro and Pesci. Compared to Goodfellas, it's just pretty good. However, as a standalone, it's outstanding.
All great movies. Casino, Goodfellas, Scarface, Godfather... all some of the best movies I have ever seen. Classics. Scarface is by far the worst of the list, but it does not suck by any means.
Wow, i loved scarface, totally badass dude. That's all i got from it. I don't think it's supposed to be genius or anything, just this guy that comes from nothing and is crazy ruthless. I like it a lot, just got to take it with a grain of salt.
Scarface is a good movie....way better than Casino...there I said it. I love gangster movies and I was bored as hell watching Casino in the movie theaters
In college days, we'd watch Scarface and try to count each f-bomb while also taking a swig at each f-bomb. Never did come up with a solid count.
