http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbcchx0ipwA I've loved this guy ever since he worked out for Portland. French Connection can replace the Spanish Connection!
Well he is projected to go somewhere in the second round, so I suppose chances are better than average KP could go get him if he REALLY wanted him. He could be an interesting project to stash overseas for a few more years and see if he can improve his game, but as of right now he put up fairly lackluster numbers in a middle tier European league. http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Rodrigue-Beaubois-1298/
He is so long and athletic I think he could become kind of like Rondo with a jumper. If we have the roster spot I would even like to have him this year, maybe send him to the D-League and give him a chance to prove himself early. I realize stashing him is probably the better course to take but for some reason I really like this guy.
I agree I love this guys potential and was impressed with what KP said about him last year. Definitely worth a second round pick imo. Future Rajon Rondo w/ a jumper?? Maybe.
More food for thought: http://www.draftexpress.com/article/Situational-Statistics-This-Years-Point-Guard-Crop-3209/ I dunno ... I admit I'm kind of intrigued, he definitely strikes me as a project to keep overseas for a few more years of seasoning, and if you draft him in the second round you can actually offer him up to the full MLE at whatever time you want to bring him over, which could be a lot more advantageous in getting him out of a restrictive buyout down the road (assuming he blows up). He's definitely not "The Answer" TM in the short run, but he sounds a helluva lot more intriguing from an upside perspective than Petteri for instance.
I would be incredibly happy if we drafted him, brought him over for summer league, then sent him back. With Petteri, in my opinion, it's almost as if his ship has already sailed. I know he is still young but has he even shown much improvement? Beaubois has much more potential and could improve very fast. Beaubois is noted for his great defense because he not only has really long arms (6'10" wingspan) he has very fast lateral movement. I believe he has all of the qualities we need in a PG, he just needs to polish them more. In my optimism, I suspect he could blow up summer league and they would want to give him a roster spot! They haven't even drafted him and I'm already expecting him to earn a roster spot, haha. Anything is possible, right?
Seems to be pretty weak competition but his ball handling ability with both hands, uber quickness and athleticism intrigues me. Doesn't really strike a starting PG down the line in a traditional system, more in the mold of Lou Williams with better physical attributes. And I agree, he seems to have far more NBA potential than Petteri. Pairing him w/ Bayless at SL this summer would be fun to watch.
We have the 2nd pick in the 2nd round, if we want him we can get him without having to do anything -- he's not a first round guy.
from what I've read on various French forums, despite his wingspan he's not really a defensive specialist like Rondo. The better comparisons might be: Leandro Barbosa - best case scenario Flip Murray / Juan Dixon w/ better wingspan - likely scenario out of the NBA - worst case scenario there's an interview (in French) with Beaubois conducted right after he (and his teammate Nando de Colo) declared for the draft. Most of the questions are pretty normal (what does the NBA represent for you, etc.) but these two stuck out for me. I assume we were the team that gave him a promise in the 2nd round, but who knows. You're expected to be drafted in the 2nd round, between 40th and 50th. Would you be satisfied with that? The goal, if I'm drafted, is to have a guaranteed contract. Already last year I had a proposition at the top of the 2nd round, better than 40th place. If I'm lower than last year, I'll be pretty upset. We'll see. Lots of things are decided in the workouts. The first round would be nice, but players in the 2nd round have also succeeded in the NBA. Do you think about the possibility that you won't be drafted? Yes, of course. You always have to think about that possibility. You don't know what can happen. If I'm not drafted, I'll return to Cholet for another year. Contractually, I don't have a choice.
In my opinion Rondo is not even close to a being defensive specialist. He constantly lets the man he's guarding get past him, and seems not to try, unless he is going for a steal. Steal numbers do not mean "defensive specialist".
Rondo is a tremendous defender. He's not a "defensive specialist" as that implies that all he can do is defend. He's a great defender, a phenomenal rebounder, an excellent distributor and great at getting to the hoop and finishing or drawing a foul. He just can't shoot worth a damn. If he could, he might be a Hall of Fame talent. He doesn't just go for steals. He's very good at sticking to his man, he's just given a defensive rover role many times, because he's so dangerous at generating turnovers.
It is amazing how he is already so good when he can't shoot at all, and he shoots 64% on his free throws. I still believe he is overrated as a defender, although I admit I may have exaggerated when saying all he does is go for steals.
When I said defensive specialist, I was thinking of Rondo when he was drafted. From what I remember, he was thought of as a defensive specialist at the time. Maybe someone like Mario Chalmers would've been better. In any case, Beaubois isn't similar to either of them, the Barbosa comparison still seems pretty good. He sounds like he wants to come over this year, but hopefully he could be persuaded to stay in France for one more year until his contract is up. His team, Cholet, will be losing their top scorer, Nando de Colo, so he would probably get even more touches next year.
Yeah, I like that comparison. And, coincidentally, I wanted Barbosa with the pick that ended up being Outlaw. Since second-round picks tend to amount to little/nothing anyway, I wouldn't mind taking a shot on an athletic combo guard with the upside of a Barbosa.
Hell with all the threads about replacing our PG, maybe we should just have one thread entitled "Anybody but Blake and Sergio at PG".
