Ohtani wants to win so he can Bonilla the hell out of the contract to make it happen. If Ohtani is out of the league in 10 years, the dodgers will have a dead hit of $68 mil per year. Even though there isn't a salary cap, that's massive.
I know and it's absurd. Maybe this nonsense is going to change the rules baseball still dying as a sport in the USA.
...the game peaked in 2007. I think recent "success" has more to do with coming out of COVID than it does anything else.
Hard disagree. Hockey and baseball are two sports that are better live than on TV. Now with the personalities in the game and the MLB finally getting their head out of their ass, the game has blossomed. It's here to stay.
Gambling and traditional fantasy games has also helped. According to ESPN, the Dodgers have to put each years money in an escrow account that represent the value in present dollars. Looks like this year it would be 44M. If that is the case and they avoid huge tax penalties when they actually start paying, this might be a great deal. The Dodgers are probably the only team that could capitalize on Ohtani and make this deal feasible. Curious if MLB or the Dodgers have the Japan territorial rights. I can imagine they would be lucrative, with many waking up to watch Ohtani play. Sort of like many of us up early enjoy Premiere League soccer.
