Shocking loss for the US last night. We clearly had the best players on the pitch, but they just couldn't get it together. Doesn't help that Guatemala was playing at home and US youth teams rarely go into hostile environments. Its nice that US gets placed in the U-20 tournament automatically, but I think the kids would be better served by playing on the road in Costa Rica or Honduras or Canada.
Also, for what its worth, the team was a bit short handed in some regards. Had the team made it to the U-20 World Cup, Josh Gatt, Fabian Huerzler and Juan Agudelo were both likely to be on the squad, with Gatt and Agudelo almost guaranteed to be starters. Bobby Wood being injured made things worse on the squad for this match as he may have the brightest future of the bunch from what I have been reading about him. Wood starting would have moved Garza back to his familiar left back, rather than the leftwing spot he was occupying in this match. Regardless of some short-handedness, the US squad had an embarassment of riches that should have seen them through to Colombia with no problems in qualifying.
