Watched NBATV draft preview last night (missed part of it when the woman arrived to give estimate on installing my new ceiling fan - had to mute to talk to her - she breezed in saying I hope you don't mind I'm wearing shorts - not at all, said I, and tripped over my tongue...)

Anyway - the important part, they speculate Blazers take Drummond at 6 and Lamb at 11. They have GSW taking Lillard at 7.

I have to say I am liking Lillard a lot because of what are called intangibles. It's not home town chauvinism, you do have to be tough growing up in Oakland. And he wants to come to Portland. He is coachable. I really want him. OTOH, it's the same reasons I have cold feet on Drummond. When they mentioned his 49% FT shooting all I could think of was oh god, Chris Dudley without the Ivy League degree.

posted more for the "could be any minute now", less his mock.

Houston is presumably going to have to manufacture multiple top-10 picks to get Orlando intrigued. But that's direction Rockets are headed

This HOU "thing" for Howard seems incredibly stupid to me, overpay for a ONE yr rental? Either I am missing something big time or this smacks of utter stupidity

It's really not. I will explain.

Rockets basketball is maybe 7th most popular sport in the Houston area behind the Texans, Astros, Longhorns, Aggies, Cougars and maybe the Cowboys. They are stuck in the same situation Portland is. Not being good enough to win, and not being bad enough to get an elite draft pick. So by acquiring one of the games biggest stars, they will be able to generate some interest and put butts in the seasts. If he stays then they can build around him. If he goes, the team can then start from scratch.

They're a middling team thats not going anywhere. Too good to get any impact draft picks and too bad to do any kind of damage in the playoffs. The risk of Howard bailing is huge, but at some point they're going to have to blow up the inadequate Scola/Martin/Lowry core and start from scratch pretty soon anyway. Why not take a gamble on Dwight? He's been fickle and they might have enough ammo to get another star after a Dwight trade. If it pans out they make themselves contenders for the forseeable future. If not, they were about to blow it up anyway.

Interesting angle, so one yr of possible increase in interest, they may not be much better, and then a rebuild that lasts way longer than normal because they gave so much away. IMO stupid but whatever

or blow it up now in one of the deepest drafts in a long time and when you already have multiple picks? I would go that route as opposed to pie in the sky

I think it's brilliant. Most of the time picks in the teens and 20's aren't going to turn a franchise around. You need to get lucky in the draft if you are not a city high end FA's want to play in. Take a shot at Howard, and if he swears up and down that he won't re-sign, then deal him for assets at the deadline, and rebuild with a high pick in next years draft, as well as with the other assets you receive from Howard

The rockets have the rights to motiejunas too, who probably would have been a first rounder this year to send to orlando.

well I will agree to disagree and we'll see in the fullness of time

Sources say Houston has an offer of Lowry, the #14 and #16 picks for Tyreke Evans and the #5 pick on the table. Up to Sacramento to decide.

6/11 and matthews for Evans and 5

Get it done, Neil

Talked to a source last night and Tyreke Evan's name was mentioned as being very available. Sacramento wants a lot for him.

I'm not a big fan of Evan's. He's a stat filler, but doesnt make his team better and doesnt get wins. Probably why they want to get rid of him. He's also a knucklehead.

Source involved in Houston-Kings talks says the Rockets have not offered the No. 14, No. 16 pick and Kyle Lowry for Tyreke Evans and No. 5.

Evans seems like the type of guy that will bounce around. Good talent, but would not want him my team.

Draft Blog: 10 burning Draft questions including Austin Rivers: Kobe or Jerryd Bayless? http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/blog...-anthony-davis-worth-hype-other-key-questions (insider)

5. Austin Rivers: The next Kobe Bryant, or the next Jerryd Bayless?
I don't think there's a more polarizing player in the draft than Rivers. Fans and scouts tend to either love him or hate him. I know several teams have him ranked in the top 10 on their Big Boards. I know several others that have him in the second round. How's that for a draft range?

Rivers does model his offensive game after Bryant -- for better and for worse. He's a super-aggressive scorer. He's got a killer crossover, has mastered the fade away J and wants the ball in his hands at the end of close games. He loves himself some hero ball.

Again, for good and for bad, Rivers also has modeled his off-the-court behaviors to emulate Bryant. He works hard. He's tough. He's super confident. However, he's also got a wrap as a selfish player who bristles at teammates and doesn't know how to share.

Factor in Rivers' pedestrian shooting numbers, poor free-throw shooting and poor assist-to-turnover ratio, and suddenly he looks very un-Kobe-like.

But the real concern for Rivers is that he physically doesn't hold a candle to Bryant. He's not as big, not as long and not as explosive as Bryant was. Take away Bryant's size, length and explosiveness and Kobe isn't Kobe. That's why, in some respects, Rivers looks a lot like Raptors combo guard Bayless.

Whichever team takes Rivers will be taking a risk. It is one that could pay off big time, or one that could blow up in a team's face.

Draft Blog: 10 burning Draft questions including Austin Rivers: Kobe or Jerryd Bayless? http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/blog/...-key-questions (insider)10. How many draft night trades will happen in the lottery?

I'm going with three. I think the Bobcats will swap the No. 2 pick with someone -- most likely the Cavs. The Cavs could send back pick No. 4 and either the 24th pick or picks 33 and 34.

I think the Kings are likely to move No. 5 as well ... most likely to the Rockets for picks 14, 16 and perhaps an additional player. The Rockets have already agreed to trade Chase Budinger for the 18th pick in the draft. The 18th pick just gives them more ammunition to perhaps add another top-10 pick, in the hopes of putting together a package to make a trade for Howard.

The Blazers, Warriors, Raptors and Hornets are also looking at various options with their picks. I think the Blazers at either No. 6 or No. 11 are the most likely of that bunch to make a trade. They have interest in Jazz forward Paul Millsap and Rockets guard Kyle Lowry.

11 and Matthews to move up one spot? (joking?)

I still wouldn't mind seeing if there was a way to get 14 and 16 from Houston for 11. Or, if they really want to stockpile picks then 11 for Lowry.

I don't think Olshey will trade picks for Lowry. He keeps making comments about how there is just not enough talent out there to overcome the value of the picks. He also talks a lot about not adding mid-level players. I think Lowry could fit both those descriptions.

Maybe?

I can see if Drummond is really their guy, or if Barnes slips to #6, taking one of them and dealing #11 for a guy like Lowry. I know many aren't fans, but this team could do a lot worse for a PG than him, IMO
