2017 Luxury Tax (aka, why Plumlee will be traded)

Yep--Aldrich/Williams has been my wish for a few weeks now, and I don't see why we wouldn't be able to get both.
We have right about 24 MIL available? So it is close. I think we may be a MIL short but hopefully we could get one guy budge on his demands in that case (if we get to this plan D).

At what point do you go to this Duo? Curious on peoples thoughts. Do you go to Aldrich/Williams if you miss out on Horford, Whiteside and Howard or do you wait until after you miss out on someone like Ezeli or do you go to this duo even before going for Howard? etc...

Personally I'd want Horford first (although I don't think he's an option), then probably Whiteside, then Howard at $20-22M (not interested at a higher number), then Aldrich before looking at Ezeli or Mahinmi.

If you could get someone like Taj Gibson for merely cap space, a throw in (Pat), and a 2nd rounder (yes CHI is rumored to be giving him away at this point) then where would a trade like that fit in on your priority? Would also leave money left over for one of the 2nd tier Centers like Aldrich or Mahinmi.

Are you cereal? This is likely the last time in quite a while that we'll have significant cap space, why on earth would you want to spend it on those two guys???

Where do you personally go if plan A, B and C say no (Horford, Whiteside and Howard)? I move to trades first. But I think both guys that Platypus likes would start for us. Aldrich over Plumlee (although both would play a lot) due to shooting prowess from mid-range (Stotts loves it) and Williams over Aminu (due to better guarding NBA 4's) so it isn't the worst move we could make (That would be paying Biyombo imo).

I'm not particularly high on Gibson, in relation to what we need. He's an average player (good defender) starting the backside of his career. We already have Aminu, Davis, and Vonleh at PF; I don't think that whatever incremental improvement the team might see from 25mpg of Gibson is worth the $9M he'd be due, especially for just a single year of him going into UFA. He wouldn't be on my radar at all.

KOR nailed it. I'd go for the big names first, obviously, but assuming we don't get them (which has generally been my assumption), those would be the value signings that I'd go for that would make the most sense.

Neither guy is better than what we already have and they're older. It doesn't make us better and would be a horrible way to use the cap space.

Plumlee, Davis, Vonleh, Meyers, Aminu at the 4/5 - Aldrich isn't an upgrade, he'd just be another okay role player added to a roster of okay role players. Same with Williams. This is a guy who had zero points THREE times in the series with Miami and you want to bring him in to start? You either sign a good FA or you trade. If you can't do either and get someone better than these two then perhaps being a GM isn't your thing. But I'm confident Olshey can.

Were you of the same opinion last year when our $30M in cap space resulted in value signings Aminu and Davis? Was being a GM not Olshey's thing after last July?

No I was not of the same opinion last season. I thought what Olshey had to do, straddling the line of hoping Aldridge returns while still adding good value guys, was an extremely difficult position to be in and he did extremely well.

With the way this young team exceeded expectations and should continue to grow, this off-season should be about adding a difference maker. Not more role players to replace the role players that exceeded expectations last year.

Agree to disagree.

I just don't get the love for Aldrich. He's 27 and has already been on 5 teams, so if he signed with us that would be 5 teams that obviously didn't think he was very good. He only played 60 games last year, averaging 13 minutes a game. Advanced stats or per 36 stats don't really mean much with such a small sample size. I don't see any reason to think he'd be better than Plumlee or Davis.
