Portland has Bird or Early Bird rights on both Whiteside & Hood.

Portland could re-sign both players and still have the FULL MLE available to sign other players.

Yeah the could use the MLE, BAE, and TPE to bring in new players then sign Whiteside and Hood. If they are going all in they might not care about going over the tax, though they would be a repeater.

Remember that the hard cap after using the full MLE is actually the apron, which is about $6M above the tax line. So really about $14M in room.

yeah, I don't think the Blazers have to be worried about being hard-capped this year....unless they re-sign Whiteside

but Nurkic and Zach are about 2 bigs too few, and you can't have confidence in their ability to stay healthy

Why draft every year when you already have youngsters, sure use the picks when needed for trades.
There is always a pool of FA's that are obtainable.

Off that list of UFAs, I wouldn't mind:

  • Ibaka (only 31...seems older)
  • Favors (only 29...seems older)
  • Dragic (what a backup he would be)
  • Tristan Thompson (again, seems older than 29)
  • Meyers (if he is 3rd string at a Vet minimum, he can shoot)
  • Jeremi Grant (not happening but would love it)
  • Crowder (another defensive bulldog)
  • Harrell (dreaming)
  • Rondo (great backup)
  • Noel (solid backup C)
  • Wood (not as hyped as some, but still a good bench player)
  • Morris brothers (just so they stop killing us)

Seems like Neil should be able to get one of those which would significantly upgrade our bench.

Neil has not been shy about signing RFA's either as a chance.

I definitely think we need a backup point guard. I really want a veteran. Someone that can come in and run the team when Dame is off the floor. I actually love the idea of Rondo or maybe Michael Carter Williams. Someone that plays defense and passes the ball.

The main question in my mind is whether RoCo is a small forward or a power forward? If he's a small forward then we need to go out and get a starting power forward. If he's a power forward then we need to go out and get a wing. I want to deal CJ for one of those positions and start GTJ. My dream scenario would be Paul George.

Dame
GTJ
George
RoCo
Nurk

This would be a championship caliber lineup. But the Clips likely wouldn't do it, so who else is out there? I would love to get one of Boston's wings. I'm not sure how steep the price would be though. DeRozan is probably much more gettable, but is he a good fit? Does he play defense?

My goals for this offseason is:
Backup point guard
Starting Wing or Power forward
Bench scorer.

Agreed, I just can't stomach the thought of George's personality. I think both of these lineups would be incredibly balanced, as Covington can cover some of the sins of a weak defensive link (but probably not two with CJ).

Lillard/Trent/Derozan/Covington/Nurkic; Lillard/Trent/Covington/Love/Kurkic

I think CJ should have more trade value than either of Derozan or Love, but I'm not sure that either of those teams would want CJ either.

CJ is getting on the older side and he hasn't proven anything. Never an Allstar. Doesn't play defense. I'm not sure how much value he actually has around the league.

I will say that we really pissed away his value. He should have been dealt two years ago.

Devin Booker: Only an AllStar once (and then only because Dame got injured) and doesn't play defense. I'm not sure how much value he actually has around the league.

Well, scoring is pretty important in the NBA. And he has proved he can do that during the reg season and in the playoffs.
The 50 point night in 29 minutes (18-of-25) was historic. But it does come down to salary. High salaries for non-super stars make them hard to trade for fair value.

And of course, fans absolutely HATE it when a player is overpaid.

Weird comparison.

Booker is taller. Younger. Better scorer. Better defender.

CJ is a classic tweener. He's not a point guard but he's too short to really be a great two guard. He doesn't play good defense, he doesn't pass the ball, and he's selfish on offense.

These are not things most people covet.
