Game Thread 2022-23 Game #1 - BLAZERS @ KINGS - OCTOBER 19, 2022 - WEDNESDAY - 7:00 PM (PDT) ROOT (1 Viewer)

We didn't play smart and our big guns didn't really step up, but you've got to take the win on the road against what looks to be the best team the Kings have trotted out in years.

Grant, Justice and Hart really stepped up on both ends. They frustrated Sabonis at one end and fouled him out on the other. I thought it was fascinating and I was happy to see Nurk didn't get a sniff of the court when we pulled it out.

For one game, Grant looks like what Dame and the Blazers thought they were getting when they pursued him. He didn't try to play like he was a No. 1 option, but, when the opportunities were there, he PERFORMED like a No. 1 option, getting good shots or getting to the line and doing it in the framework of the offense.
He isolated and scored at the end in a way Aminu, Harkless, Covington, and Nance couldn't.

EDIT: I forgot to add Derrick Jones Jr to that list of misfits.

Watched the whole game from my flight. United came thru.

Good win but we have to get Dame some easier looks. SAC is shockingly competent at guarding him but that was not pretty.
It's not that shocking Mitchell and Davis are a couple of dawgs and besides them being Dame's primary defenders, the Kings ran everyone at him when he got the ball but that's not new. It's also not new for Dame to have a bad shooting night, I don't think he'll have a lot of them. It would be great for Dame to get cleaner looks but he had plenty of makeable shots that either just didn't drop or he missed pretty badly tonight. He'll make those, I'm not worried about that.

I'm worried that him and Ant look about as effective on defense as Dame and CJ have for the last decade. That's not good.

You know that saying about earning playing time? Maybe that should apply to everyone.

He's the best forward we've had since LaMarcus and he understands his role a lot better than LA did after Roy went away. The dude is a dawg along with being very talented and skilled on both ends.

We need better play at the 5 spot next to him. We need better three point defense (that sure fucking sounds familiar). I don't know if we'll be getting those two things but we also need Dame and Ant to score more efficiently and I know we'll get that going.

Weird game. Great start, solid finish, ugly middle. Nice to see us win when Dame doesn't have a great game.

So nice to have guys like Grant/Hart putting up 42 points on only 22 attempts. Sharpe gave us some bonus buckets as well!

Nurk was the one major negative, but it's on me if I expect anything else at this point.

what exactly is your anti-blazer issue? You're shitting on them all the time

Grant scored 23 points on 11 shots; he had 8 rebounds, 2 steals, played great defense, and came thru in the clutch. He played extremely well. Portland doesn't win this game without Grant and Hart. Trading CJ for those two was a great trade for Portland
Ed O also thinks Central Banks are our friends. I haven't cared about his opinion in over a decade.

I love that Winslow was the 6th man replacing Ant and Hart slid to the 2....that was a great first rotation getting bigger and staggering the smaller guards

Yes I noticed that as well. Actually, I loved all the rotations tonight. Especially the closing unit.

Winslow +21 and no other was close. He makes his teammates better.
He's the kind of bench player you need to win in this league. I really like what he can do in the second unit as a glue guy at either forward spot.

Did you watch the fucking game. Yeah, the Kings ran a lot more guys at Dame when he initiated the offense but Ant didn't get 9 assists and only had 22 points on 22 shots. I know we expect more from Dame and he'll give us more but let's not make crazy baseless comments.

Dame had a bad shooting game and an average floor game. But what he caused was the King defense to flex toward him all night leaving other guys in single coverage....like Grant, Hart, and Ant

It was nice to get a W in a game where Damian didn't (most likely) look like he will by the end fo the season, same with Simons.

It forces other players to show up, and thankfully they have at least 2 in the starting 5 that showed up better than most players in their position has over the last 6 + years.

And Sharpe, wow...it's hard to not think he's going to be something special.

Like the post game show. Have never stayed tuned in to see ex-Portlander Neil Everett.

They rope a doped us in preseason...team has grit! Great start to the season on the road 1-0!!

All the rest...will wait for more samples before too many knee-jerk conclusions are drawn.
