With less than a month until the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup the Australian men's national team have spoken out against the treatment of migrant workers and LGBTI+ people in Qatar.

Whilst the sentiment is admirable, they're not boycotting it either. I was actually hoping we wouldn't qualify.

Perhaps this will make the Socceroos even more hated than they already are by the locals. I think any hatred would improve their performance.

More than 6,500 migrant workers have died in Qatar since they bribed their way to hosting the World Cup.

Very excited to watch these games with the FAMS!

Qatari World Cup ambassador labels homosexuality ‘damage in the mind’

A Qatari World Cup ambassador called homosexuality a “damage in the mind” in a German TV interview, sparking criticism in Europe just 12 days before the tournament kicks off.

Qatar will accept gay visitors but “they have to accept our rules”, former international footballer Khalid Salman said in the interview with the ZDF broadcaster, due to be aired on Tuesday evening.

Salman also said homosexuality was “haram” - forbidden in Islam - during the interview, which was abruptly broken off after his comments.

Qatar has come under sustained fire over its human rights record ahead of the World Cup, including its treatment of foreign workers and its stance on women’s and LGBTQ rights.
This is going well. The soccer won't at all be overshadowed.

Saw a piece on Real Sports last year about the way they used basically slave labor to build these stadiums. Workers came in from other country’s working crazy hours living in horrible conditions. They tool their passports when they showed up. Tons of them died and buried in mass graves. It was horrible.

Also check out the FIFA doc on Netflix, pretty eye opening to how they do business.

Hahahah, I'll be watching but mostly to see the slow motion train wreck of allowing Qatar the world cup. The beer sales is the topper so far, no beer at a sporting event...... Good job at assimilating to the international community and showing the world your not a repressive, backwards nation. Looks like a fun destination to add to my list of bullshit countries not worth my time.

People aren't supporting the location, they are supporting the sport. No different than the Olympics recently being in China and Russia.

Thousands of people died to have it at that location. If you still support it, you're condoning corrupt FIFA taking money from any shitty country to host the World Cup.

I'm aware of what went down. If you closely I already posted about it. I'm supporting the athletes, not the location. No different than the olympics you supported while they were in China and Russia.

Actually it's no different than my family supporting the Thorns players in spite of what the team was doing. The athletes shouldn't be penalized for the other bullshit. Suns players should be supported by fans in spite of the owners off court issues as well.
