They didn’t really tank. They were playing like shit, Robinson got hurt and it wasn’t worth it to bring him back. They got incredibly lucky since Boston DID tank and had two cracks at it but wound up with Billups and Mercer.

bull-fucking-shit they "didn't tank"

over a 7 year period:

55-27
62-20
59-23
20-62
56-26
61-21 (adj)
53-29

Bring those receipts!

everybody who was watching the NBA that season knew the Spurs were tanking. Popovich, who was both the GM and interim coach that season even admitted, in Popovich fashion, that the Spurs tanked. They held out healthy players, made no moves at the trade deadline, and lost 16 of their last 20 games, including 10 of their last 12.

Vancouver and Boston were organically bad and undoubtedly enhanced their suckitude by tanking

then it was a 4 team race for 3rd seed between Spurs (20-62), Nuggets (21-61), 76ers (22-60), Mavs (24-58). Spurs won by a nose

I wouldn't have guessed Whiteside would fill out that feat.
Whiteside averaged a double-double for 6 straight seasons (2014-15 through 2019-20.) and was #1 in rebounds in the NBA in 2016-17, but he did only have one 30+ game in 2019-20.

According to perplexity.ai he had only three 30+ point games in his career.

If he was a better FT shooter he would have been extremely dominant.

I remember his rebounding prowess, but the 30+ scoring caught me by surprise.

With only one such game that year, having it coincide with a teammate's 30+ pt triple double is pretty damn low odds.

Blazers don't tank good.
Fortunately the Spurs didn't either so we're still in the running for that 8th spot in the lotto.

Now if we play to win against the Raptors, Spurs, Bulls and Jazz then we'll probably find ourselves behind the Spurs and possibly even behind the Bulls who will get a chance at making the playoffs in the play-in tournament (they've locked that up).

Obviously we'll be rooting for the Bulls to win two in a row on opponents' courts if this is the case but if they don't and we have more regular season wins than them, they will have a better shot at moving up in the lotto and if neither us or the Bulls do they will have played in the play-in and will draft in front of us.
