#24 Anfernee Simons

Maybe there's a CJ trade in the works. There might be one or two posters here who would be happy with that. ;)

I don't think that's it of course. I think Simon's is a project. It's like getting a lottery pick next year. This pick doesn't get us to the finals next year, but no other player at 24 had a predictable probability of doing that either. It's like grabbing a free lottery pick a year early. How else were the Blazers going to get a lottery pick? All picks are a gamble. This one is strategically a great long term move.
Exactly my thoughts.

A high school draftee needs to be big for his position, or else he'll be a long-term project.

When we drafted Telfair, I was shocked because he was the smallest high schooler I'd ever seen drafted. Simons is 6-3 (slightly smaller than average for a PG, a shrimp for a SG) and weighed 181 (a diminutive Tom Thumb at either guard position) when last measured.

Simons is 6-4, which is definitely above average for a PG, and wingspan matters.

Measured 6'1.5" barefoot, 6'3.5" in shoes, 181 lbs, 6'7" wingspan, and 8'2" standing reach by USA Basketball in October of 2017

The shoes added 2 inches? Edit: Oldfisherman already noticed.

Simons is 6' 1 1/2" no shoes.

No...but is he playing in 2 1/2" heels?

False. 6'2.25

The guy is tiny for a SG and a little short (like Lillard) for a PG. This is especially important for a high schooler because

He already has an endorsement from an NBA player

From Schmitz:

Anfernee Simons and Jazz rookie Donovan Mitchell are very close. I asked Mitchell about Simons after a Lakers preseason game in October: "He's talented. He can score at all 3 levels. The main thing I talk to him about is just defense because scorers are easy to come by, scorers who play defense aren't. I've been talking to him a bunch. I wish him the best of luck. He's just a talented kid. Athletic. Knows where to be, knows the game, and I think that's rare to find in a kid that age. He has a bright future."
Kobe endorsed Evan Turner, doesn’t mean he’s a good player.

got enough arc on your shot, what's 2 inches anyway....Curry shoots off the rafters and he's a shrimp by NBA standards

I was getting ready to post that. Remember last year when Dame was high on Donovan Mitchell?

It's funny when people say things like, "I miss Trader Bob". This pick is exactly what someone like Trader Bob would have done. He always nabbed people like Simons. It's like gambling that he would be a lottery pick if he were in next year's draft.

This kid has talent, but he’s a project. The pick was consistent with the notion that the Blazers weren’t looking to fix their deficiencies through the draft. Trades, TPEs, and the MLE are the tools he’ll be looking to use.

I had to call my father and rant for 10 minutes straight about this. He laughed the entire time. Thought it was hilarious.

We're both baffled by this pick. The best part about it is: there's no justification, at all, for it. Zip. Zero.

At least with Meyers he had the physical stats. But this kid has, literally, nothing.

My point is, who gives a shit what anyone says. Dude needs to prove himself before he gets ANY respect.
He's a Blazer now...hasn't made a mistake and has a fresh slate....I'm cheering for his success and welcoming him to ripcity...I respect that he impressed our staff and earned a shot

When I posted that Simon is 6-3 and weighs only 181, I got the stats from this

http://www.nbadraft.net/players/anfernee-simons

Now that I look back a half-hour later, his score has increased from 90 to 91! They increased his Strength rating from 7 to 8. They are jimmying their evaluations to fall into an order similar to the draft!

Truth is nobody knows yet what this kid is going to be. The facts are that he was drafted 24th and if you get a guy who can even play a little bit at that point in the draft you're doing OK. My expectations are low and the odds are he'll live up to those expectations. Was there a better option they passed on? Yeah? Maybe? Who knows? Was anybody at 24 going to push this team from an "also-ran" to serious contender status? I seriously doubt it.

So a big bowl of *shrug* from me.

To me this says Bazz is gone so Simons could get Baldwin backup minutes and Baldwin gets Bazz minutes
to me this says stash as Simons is 19 & straight outta HS... Bazz's PTB status isn't threatened at all

hopefully trade fronts bring the needed 3D SF the 2018-19 team badly needs

STOMP

He's done everything he could possibly do. He can't do more until summer league - same for every other player in the draft.

The truth is, of course, that you're pissed. Things didn't go your way, and rational or not, you're expressing your displeasure.
When you cool down, you'll give him a chance, if for no other reason than YOU DON'T HAVE A CHOICE.

Typical here, really. Everyone wants high risk, high reward. They laud it when it returns Lillard, and hate it when it gives
you Biebs. Simons is highly skilled at the game of basketball and will be a fantastic player. However, he is severely
physically limited. This is a good thing - if he wasn't he would have gone much earlier in the draft.

sensible post ....yeah, maybe, Who knows? pretty much sums up the entire thread! Good to see you posting again! Always enjoy them

I’ll start giving a shit when he proves he was worth our selection. I was the same way with Collins last year, he grew on me and I WAS WRONG ABOUT HIM (there you go @BonesJones ).

Swanigan hasn’t done shit either and until he does, he isn’t shit.

Naw, Bob would have shaken up the shit show roster and pick up talent to push to make an advance, not just bake the crap cake

He wasn't the #9 high school prospect in 2018 for no reason... he's athletic and skilled and unselfish.

Rolling the dice on a guy who might be a difference-maker late in the first round makes a lot more sense than trying to fill a gap in the roster. The Blazers should be able to give him time to develop and see if he can step in a year or two.

I'm not sure it's a great pick, but anyone who thinks there is a great pick at #24 is usually thinking wrong.

I don't think Bazz wants to spend this point in his career playing spot minutes behind Dame and CJ..he can get more burn on a lottery team and a bigger paycheck

With his age, I wouldn'tbe surprised if Simons grew a little bit more.

With trades. He probably would have taken Simons at 24 as well. Yall act like trades aren't a thing and we can't/won't make one before the start of next season.

Well to each his own...I wouldn't enjoy that sort of pessimism going into next season myself but hey...not everyone will enjoy the process

That's not how he got his reputation. Whitsitt's strength was wheeling and dealing, mainly in trades other than on draft day. (He liked to obtain a 1st-round pick in a trade, then use it to grease a later trade, instead of saving it for the draft.) He isn't as well-known for his drafts (but he wasn't bad, cough, Shawn Kemp).
