<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>BAGHDAD, Iraq - Nearly 35,000 civilians were killed last year in Iraq, the United Nations said Tuesday, a sharp increase from the numbers reported previously by the Iraqi government.Gianni Magazzeni, the chief of the U.N. Assistance Mission for Iraq, said 34,452 civilians were killed and 36,685 were wounded last year.Iraqi government figures in early January put last year's civilian death toll at 12,357. When asked about the difference, Magazzeni said the U.N. figures were compiled from information obtained through the Iraqi Health Ministry, hospitals across the country and the Medico-Legal Institute in Baghdad."Without significant progress in the rule of law sectarian violence will continue indefinitely and eventually spiral out of control," he warned. The Iraqi Health Ministry could not immediately be reached for comment, but the government has disputed previous figures released by the U.N. as "inaccurate and exaggerated."Magazzeni said 6,376 civilians were killed violently in November and December — 4,731 of those in Baghdad, most as a result of gunshot wounds. He noted that was a slight decrease from the previous two-month period, during which UNAMI recorded a total of 7,047 civilians killed. The mission's latest bimonthly report also noted that some figures were not yet included in the total for December. The figures were released as Baghdad braces for a major security operation to be launched by the Iraqi government and U.S. forces aimed at quelling the rampant sectarian violence that has been on the rise since the Feb. 22 bombing of a Shiite mosque in Samarra.Much of the violence has been blamed on Shiite militias, particularly the Mahdi Army militia that is loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, a key supporter of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Dozens of bodies turn up on the streets of Baghdad daily, many showing signs of torture."The root causes of the sectarian violence lie in revenge killings and lack of accountability for past crimes as well as in the growing sense of impunity for ongoing human rights violations," the agency said, calling on the Iraqi government to step up efforts to restore law and order. The U.N. report also said that 30,842 people were detained in the country as of Dec. 31, including 14,534 in detention facilities run by U.S.-led multinational forces.</div>

And how many soldiers died from our side? Make these a combination and continue the numbers throughout the year and the deaths of 9/11 look like nothing.

^The Shah of Iran was a bigger dick than Saddam and we loved him, so don't give me that

What does the Shah of Iran have to do with anything. I just brought up the question...I'm against the war and always have been, but I like to bring up questions to mix the drink a bit.

35,000 Iraqi Civilians or however many tens of thousands of American civilians killed in terrorist attacks that surely would continue to have happened had we not put a stop to it and dethroned those in power.

There's no way to stop terrorists. Every time a little Iraqi kid's dad gets blown up by american soldiers, we've made another terrorist. It's like 9/11. When people's relatives and friends were killed in 9/11 people got angry and wanted to take down the people who did this. It's the same way for the Iraqi people. If their friends or relatives get killed (especially when they're civilians) they're ready to take down the americans because of what they've done. We're there for oil. Terrorism will never end because terrorists can come from any country, even our precious US of A and terrorism is usually in the longrun fueled by payback or extremist religious people.

So we should just roll over and let the Sadda Husseins, Osama Bin Ladens, Hitlers, and Stalins of the world just take over?

He's not saying that. We're only there for the oil. It's the truth. The Shah of Iran was a much bigger dick than Saddam, and the U.S. loved him. Why?? B/c he gave us lots of cheap oil. If Saddam would have given us cheap oil, we'd have loved him

Exactly.. If you want to fight your "war on terrorism" go send all the troops into afghanistan (the real people who attacked us on 9/11) and go find Osama already. If we're not gonna do that, what are we doing in the middle east at all? Is making Iraq a "democracy" with american approved leaders really fighting terror at all?

The U.S. only cares about what goes on in the Middle East, b/c they have a lot of oil. All this money we've spent on the Iraq war could have been used for looking into alternative energy sources

Why would you go after Saddam Hussein for weapons of mass destruction and then be concerned about oil? The president needs a pink slip, and it would be about god damn time.

All we are doing in Afghanistan is killing returning Taliban and keeping places secure so the government there can do it's job... What else do you want us to do in Afghanistan? We don't need more troops there....Usama Bin Laden is nearly impossible to find...he will die of health problems (he's only in his mid-50's) or he will be killed by his followers before he is ever taken alive...He's pretty much been reduced to nothing anyway, he can no longer plan attacks while being on the run and his leadership has been scattered and killed...Thats why I don't care if he's killed or not, yes it would be great to see him killed but he's so isolated that he's no longer actively doing anything. Say what you want about the Iraq War being a disaster...helping rid Iraq of Saddam Hussein has been great for the future of that country...It's going to be hard to get Iraq going because it's been a mess for so long...things like this take time...those people have been through so much.

That's why it's about oil. We're allies with Saudi Arabia and they provide us with oil. Admit it.. The war on "terror" is stupid and makes no sense whatsoever. You're just avoiding my original argument to fight against another one.

How does it sound if you tell people you're there for oil??
