I work for an Automotive Parts distributor and we Moved containers full of air filters for autos and construction equipment. The silica in the ash decker havoc with electrical systems too.

I'm thinking about starting out for my new expensive car using synthetic motor oil. I checked out the price and it was $14/quart. Do you think it's worth it?
I should also be asking @CupWizier.
Any other car nuts out there that might have an opinion?

What the hell kind of synthetic are they trying to sell you? Synthetics are great oils and you can go longer intervals but a good quality regular oil can easily go 5,000 miles. The 3,000 mile thing was heavily promoted by the Quiklubes when they started popping up every where. Why? Obviously it sold more oil. I'm a big fan of Chevron Supreme motor oil, but most any of the major brands would be good.

What the hell kind of synthetic are they trying to sell you? Synthetics are great oils and you can go longer intervals but a good quality regular oil can easily go 5,000 miles. The 3,000 mile thing was heavily promoted by the Quiklubes when they started popping up every where. Why? Obviously it sold more oil. I'm a big fan of Chevron Supreme motor oil, but most any of the major brands would be good.

The 3,000 mile belief goes a lot further back than Quiklubes. I remember a guy telling me about that back in the late 60s. I followed that rule right up through the late 70s. I also changed the filter with every oil change
3,000 miles was easy to figure out because any number with a factor of 3 in it is divisible by 3. I could just look at the first two digits of my odometer and note right away whether it was due for an oil change assuming I changed my oil at virtually 3,000 mile intervals.
I don't remember what kind of synthetic it was but NAPA auto parts sold it.
What is an average price for a quart of synthetic? I remember when it first came out it was pretty spendy.
Also, is it a good choice for an $80,000 car?

You can usually find a 5 quart jug of a good synthetic for around $35 to $45.

I was at Lake Shasta when it first blew and later that summer was driving up to northern Idaho and there were huge piles of ash that had been plowed from the freeway. We also got a dusting at Lake Pend Oreille while sleeping on the beach during one of the afterxhoxks

No, they recommend regular motor oil but I figure if synthetic oil is good for any good engine then it's good for mine. I'm not gonna let their recommendation affect my choice.

Synthetic doesn’t break down as quick and has other additives.

The blast must have gone right over my head. Going over my head is not at all an unusual occurrence for me, or so my wife tells me.
When we bought a house in Aloha that same year we got some heavy ash on the roof of our new house.
