5% National Consumption Tax

Alan Krueger, Obama's choice to lead an economic council, in 2009 had suggested such a tax.

Interestingly, though, he noted that it shouldn't be implemented until two years after it is announced. Theoretically, this might be a way to help jump-start the economy as many would then make their larger purchases within that two-year window as to avoid paying the tax.

Interesting, at least.

My guess is, you're only taxed on consumable items outside of "needs"? Perhaps, no tax on food, utilities, gas, etc. above and beyond what you're already being taxed on those items?
