I would think there is differently the possibility of a trade down the road.
Makes no since to have that many guards, and I know its a position-less league anymore but we are thin in the front court, thus a trade is imminent.

I don't know if it's quite as unbalanced as you suggest. Dame, CJ, Curry, Baldwin, and Simons are guards through and through, obviously. Trent and Stauskas, however, are a little bit bigger and could be run at the SF without too much difficulty.

Also, with two of the seven being rookies, and three others being on 1-year-deals, I don't think it's a significant issue or necessarily portends a future trade.

A trade is definitely a future possibility, but I doubt one is imminent. Dame and CJ start, Curry and Baldwin play backup, Stauskas gets garbage time, Trent and Simons are G league assignments. Or, as Platy points out, Trent gets some minutes at SF.

Dame- PG
CJ- SG/PG (I would never play him at PG but Terry will)
Turner- SG/SF/PG
Baldwin- PG (but has the size to guard twos and some threes)
Trent- SG/SF (Olshey said he will start off at SF)
Stauskas- SG/SF (I wouldnt play him at SF, but if Terry played Connaughton there, hell play Stauskas there as well)
Simons- (doesn’t really matter, I dont think they’re expecting him to play)

S/Fs...Mo, ET, Stauskas, Layman, Trent...of the 8 frontcourt players the 2 guards and S/Fs are mostly guys that can play 2 or 3 front court positions...Trent is the smallest in that group...Layman can play PF or SF

I think he will at some point in the season. Stotts has a history of not playing rookies much, so Trent is going to have to really shine in camp to earn minutes early in the season.

Wonder what the default second unit will look like before guys win/lose jobs.

CJ
Curry
Turner
Swanigan
Collins

That’s my guess. Looking at that, I’d almost rather put Turner at PF and insert Stauskas, Layman, or Trent. I just dont think Swanigan is ready.

I think Layman gets run before Swanigan does. We love putting those 2nd round picks out there in their 3rd year.

Neil has actually stated that during the off season he'd looking for possible trade. I think trades will heat up some before the start of the season, and there is no doubt in my mind if the right he's shopping for the next piece.

I think Gary Trent gets some run because his game is based on being active instead of just breaking people down. Reminds me a little of Dillon Brooks who I would love to have on our team. Some people just understand where to be on the court to succeed.

I don't disagree that the team wants/needs a trade, but it's a case of when does the opportunity arise for the right trade? That could happen between now and camp or not until the deadline.

I think Nik and Trent will be battling for minutes between Sg and SF rotation. To me Baldwin is not automatically in the rotation especially if Cj comes in with the 2nd unit. I think Stotts will try to use Layman has a stretch 4. But hopefully Stotts will give Cj and Dame more rest by not using them with 2nd unit. To me the 2nd unit in preseason will be Curry Nik/ Trent Zach swanigan/Layman. I believe Stotts will play with that in preseason.

I guess Layman is worth a look as a stretch four. Don’t know if he has the strength for it, but if he plays up to his skill set, he would provide mismatches on the other end of the court. He moves pretty well off the ball, cant imagine someone like Derrick Favors chasing him around.

Yeah I think there is more than enough match ups where he can be used at PF and not need a lot of strength. (although Favors is probably not one of them)

Maybe after Olshey gets canned.

You know, I think we are hoping that Curry, Stauskus or Trent will be our Sweet Lou or E Gordon gun slingers. You have to figure 1 of the 3 should be able to heat up when needed?

So I’m most excited for Curry, my trepidation is his health. I’m excited long term in Trent and if he can be a better version of AC. Stauskus, well I will cheer for him to be a good impact player but my expectations are pretty low.

He had a stress fracture of his left tibia - the same kind of injury Nurk had (although it sounds like it was worse than Nurk's). That's usually not a recurring, career threatening injury. He was cleared for full contact drills in May. I expect he'll be full strength and ready to play on opening night.

I know and I didn’t say I thought it was over for him, I’m actually pretty happy about the Curry signing I think he’s a bit under rated, I think he’ll be a good back up for Dame and CJ. I’m always cautious when he guys are injured how they will be when they get back.

The last 3 months before his injury in DAL he was averaging 15 ppg on .457 3FG%. Because he sat out all of last season, I think a lot of people forgot how well he was playing prior to his injury.

He'll still need to prove that wasn't just a 3-month long hot streak, but he has all summer, training camp and preseason to shake off the rust. He's actually a better 3-point shooter than Allen Crabbe on comparable volume.

He's not a great playmaker, but has > 2x the AST% of Crabbe and over 1.5x the AST% of Connaughton. He's also much better at creating his own shot off the dribble the either of those guys. If he can shoot anywhere near as well as he did in DAL or SAC, he should be a big upgrade in the Crabbe/Connaughton role.
