95-year prison sentence commuted by Arkansas Governor Huckabee

Very sad.

Lakewood, Washington (CNN) -- The man wanted for questioning in the fatal shooting of four police officers at a coffee shop had his 95-year prison sentence commuted by then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, authorities said late Sunday.

The sheriff's office in Pierce County, where the ambush occurred Sunday morning, have not identified Maurice Clemmons as a suspect, but said it is looking for him as part of its investigation.

Arkansas officials told the sheriff's office that Clemmons is the same person who received clemency from Huckabee in 2001, said sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer.

Absolutely horrible story. I just can't imagine what the families are going through or the fellow officers.

Not only is the killer a hardened criminal, I have been reading some reports which make him sound like a very mentally disturbed man. He insisted that all family members get naked for at least 5 minutes on Sunday. He thought he was Jesus and thought he could fly.

Clemmons was paroled in August 2000, after serving 11 years of his sentence.

"It was not something I was pleased with at the time," said Larry Jegley, who prosecuted Clemmons for aggravated robbery and other charges in Pulaski County, Arkansas. "I would be most distressed if this is the same guy."

Huckabee's office said Clemmons' commutation was based on the recommendation of the parole board that determined that he met the conditions for early release.

"He was arrested later for parole violation and taken back to prison to serve his full term, but prosecutors dropped the charges that would have held him," the statement said.

CNN could not immediately confirm the account. But the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette newspaper reported that a year after his release, Clemmons was arrested for aggravated robbery and theft.

He was taken back to prison for parole violation. But, said the paper, he was not served with the arrest warrants for the robbery and theft charges until he left prison three years later, in 2004.

His attorney argued the charges should be dismissed because too much time had passed by then. Prosecutors dropped the charges.

So he was basically put back in prison and the prosecutors dropped charges so he could be released again.

He was released on bond.

Maybe he has super mind-control powers.

This is the 2nd time this 'Tard has done this. He commuted a sentence for another guy who told him he had become a born again Christian. That guy went and raped somebody and killed them if I remember right.

I'm not going to defend this, but offer a counter-point.

Gov's & Presidents grant, literally, thousands (if not tens of thousands) of requests for clemency each year. About 99.9% of the time, it's at the behest of a parole board or some such entity they are supposed to trust. The person who makes the final sign off has not the time to become familiar with the individual cases and generally will not sign them if there is even token opposition. To try and make this all Huckabee's "fault" is idiotic at best.

I also might remind y'all of some of the grave miscarriages of justice via juries containing fair citizens like us that have given rapists, murderers and pedophiles their freedom, or denying the dealth penalty and thereby causing more terrible crimes to be committed.

So to me, it isn't necessarily Huckabee, but the system in general that he is a small part of.
