9th-grader arrested after taking homemade bomb to school

When I was in high school, there were several fake bomb threats called in and the school was evacuated both times. If they were really concerned, why wasn't the school evacuated? Shitty cops/teachers?
It was a good opportunity for everyone to bully the brown kid.

Almed goes to school everyday and is surrounded by people he is smarter than. Some of them feel inadequate and try to bully him. Many of them have very low standards on how to treat others. People that experience academic failure are also more likely to bully others. Some of them may come from home environments that are prone to producing bullies.

It is a good thing Almed is getting support from his fellow students. Some of his teachers and local enforcement officers have some serious issues.

WHATS BEHIND THE RED CASING, BRO.

Is that Yassir Arafat's head scarf thingy?

Ahmed Mohamed did a long interview, along with his attorney, on Now with Chris Hayes. He said he showed the clock to 3 teachers, the first was fine, the second said keep it under wraps in case someone thinks it's a bomb, and the third said she was confiscating it for the day. If you think something is a bomb, you don't stick it in the teacher's desk for the remainder of the school day! But he didn't think a lot about it until he was called in and interrogated by a number of cops for over an hour. He is 14 so entitled to have a parent or guardian present, and certainly an attorney. He said he repeatedly asked to have his parents called and the cops told him he could not have his parents because he was being interrogated. He was then taken away in handcuffs. Only then were his parents called. He was also suspended for 3 days, apparently for being smarter than dumbasses at the school and police department. The cops justified it by saying he could not really answer their questions, they kept asking him what the device was and he kept saying it was a clock. Because, of course, it WAS a clock.

Ahmed also said he has been subject to abuse because of his name/national origin/religion, he has been called "terrorist" and "bomber" by other kids, but did not expect that so called responsible adults would act like this (where do the kids learn it from?) He was clearly scared and hurt, as he had a right to be. He should have been applauded and probably would have been had he been a white kid named Robert Smith.

I'm glad to see that there are some adults in the country who recognize talent and innovation. President Obama has invited him to a White House session on space science and asked him to bring his cool clock, Mark Zuckerberg invited him to Facebook. Ahmed had expressed an interest in going to MIT and a physics professor at MIT said she is inviting him there, as is Harvard.

Some see terrorist, others see the future of America.

Funnily enough, had he been a white kid named Robert Smith, he probably wouldnt have received all those great invitations

It sucks for the boy, but its not law enforcement or teachers faults that other ahmeds in recent history have flown planes into buildings and raped snd killed journalists. Its not yheir fault other Ahmeds have come out saying to kill Americans. I'll get slammed for this, but better safe than sorry. Had no one checked and it was a bomb that killed someone people would be asking why it wasnt checked

Where have you people been? Have you not been paying attention to the zero tolerance crap going on around the country?

This is going on all around the country. It's not just in the south. It's educators not using their brains and suspending kids/expelling kids for the dumbest crap imaginable. I'm sorry that Ahmed was treated the way that he was, but to act like this is only happening because he's Middle Eastern is ridiculous. We have a real problem with a fear culture in this country in the wake of shootings like Sandy Hook, and it's only getting worse.

Nobody else thinks this is as fake as your average car crash money grab?

This is a total setup, knowing the racist tendency in this country and exploiting it for a lawsuit.

I bet that kid took that thing to school and said it was just a clock while giving a creepy psycho smile.

The whole thing smells IMO.

You don't think his dad is smart enough to exploit these morons?

Maybe. I guess it's possible.

see the picture of them going to see their lawyer. Looks like a family going to the lotto office to claim powerball.

Shit, I'd be using my 15 minutes of fame to make as much money as well.

To sue wouldn't they have to show damages? The kid seems to be benefiting a ton from this. Trips to the White House? Tours of MIT and Harvard? If anything he should be thanking them.

Ha! I had similar a thought. You notice it wasn't a kid name Jimmy Smith that brought bomb like device to school. No, it follows with a name like Mohammad. And it follows, that Obama weighs in.
I don't buy this bull shit story at all.

I will say this, even if it WAS done intentionally to bait the school and the police into a lawsuit, they fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

Regardless of the motive, the way that this was handled was very stupid and they left themselves wide open to litigation. If there was wrong doing, they will pay. Simple as that. The bummer is that every time this happens, it's the damn tax payers that have to foot the bill because of the actions of a politician, police officer, or school administrator.

I still don't get why a selfie of them smiling would make anyone think it's all a scam.

I guess I could see how it kinda looks like "we're off to get our phatty check! Woohoo!"

It has that "I just bought a new house!" feel to it.

If his dog got hit by a car and he was going to sue the driver would they look like this? No fucking way.

It's actually quite disgusting.

Are you serious? No person or animal was hurt at all. The kid should feel good about himself and his family should be proud of him.

How the hell is it disgusting?

It's not the only reason, the whole thing smells the more I see of it. I had the same initial reaction that the school and police were morons. Now I still believe that part, just have changed how I feel about the family. If this is a multi million dollar settlement they should look sadder than my dog scenario.

Well, that's not entirely true. If they successfully sue the school district, where do you think that money comes from? It certainly isn't going to help the people in that area.

I'm not saying he did it with the intention of filing a lawsuit, and regardless of his motive it seems like it was completely mishandled by the school and the police.... with that said, if he did it to get a big payout, that's pretty scummy.

Sure, but no one has any legitimate reason to think it was just to get a big payout.

And they never will. Not unless some kind of smoking gun is found, which I highly doubt.

Quite frankly, I hope the school gets slammed. The education system needs a wake up call about their zero tolerance policies about guns and threats. Maybe if enough of them get hammered, they will open their eyes and stop wasting time and money on silly things like punishing a kid who makes his fingers into the shape of a gun.

Where did I say that it was anything other than a feeling? Are they going to waterboard them to get the truth?

Is someone going to throw a briefcase on the floor like in Brady Bunch?

I see people living up the fame of the whole thing, I can't imagine something I'd rather do less than see a lawyer for anything.

I agree.

If any kind of policy change comes out of this it will have been a positive, whether it was all a scam or not. I don't think I would be upset even if it was somehow proven to be planned from the beginning, the school and police would still be at fault in my opinion.
