9th-grader arrested after taking homemade bomb to school

This just makes no sense at all. Sometimes you should just keep your unwarranted cynicism to yourself.
Are you serious or just......

You think people who have been horribly scarred to the tune of millions of dollars should look like that? What's you hurting your back in a car crash worth? Trillions?

I'd hate to know how much money they would deserve if they looked sad. If I were on a jury and saw that picture I'd vote for punitive damages from the school and the police to them in the amount of a penny.

What makes them any better than people who get a love tap from behind while driving and then act like they are disabled for life?

Sure, they didn't cause the crash but they don't deserve to get rich off of it.

I'm tired of schools and police getting sued for stuff you and I would just get fired for. It's bullshit and a money grab.

I agree.

If any kind of policy change comes out of this it will have been a positive, whether it was all a scam or not. I don't think I would be upset even if it was somehow proven to be planned from the beginning, the school and police would still be at fault in my opinion.

It is interesting though, because Dviss was saying that a white kid would have been treated differently, and he's probably right. I don't think any of the white kids who were suspended for some type of gun related BS (bubble gun, finger gun, or pop tart gun) were invited to the White House. The anti-gun sentiment is much much stronger with the media, and I think most people are willing to write it off because "you can't be too careful about guns and schools." blah blah blah

I don't really deny that that is a valid possibility, but I think this is ignoring the fact that this kid made this as an engineering project, and the invites to the White House and to engineering camps/programs are primarily because of that. Of course the publicity of the likely discrimination involved helped with that, but I don't think you can discount that Ahmed seems to be a very talented kid. It's very different to a kid bringing a toy gun to school IMO.

Well, it seems like most of the stories about toy guns involved kids that were much younger. Kids that were six, seven, or younger. So in that regard, Ahmed is different because he's only a few years off from college.

I brought a pocket knife to school in 1st grade and was caught using it on branches at recess. Luckily the recess monitor (parent volunteer?) knew my mom so she dealt with it discreetly and I was punished by my parents but not the school.

It sucks for the boy, but its not law enforcement or teachers faults that other ahmeds in recent history have flown planes into buildings and raped snd killed journalists. Its not yheir fault other Ahmeds have come out saying to kill Americans. I'll get slammed for this, but better safe than sorry. Had no one checked and it was a bomb that killed someone people would be asking why it wasnt checked

So because other people named Ahemed have committed crimes, it justifies putting handcuffs on a school age student with no history of problems because of his name? And no reason to believe he had a bomb, once it was checked? That is just wrong.

Not sure about you, but I am darn tired of being punished and loosing privileges and freedoms due to the criminal acts of others. Teachers and law enforcement officers are overreacting across the nation. Not just against certain groups.

Even bent over old white men like myself are being treated unfairly by our enforcement officers. An 85 year old friend and myself had a recent encounter with an enforcement officer that overreacted so badly (for no reason other than to puff out his chest), a very nice 77 year old grandmother that watched everything said to us we should have kicked his ass for his bad behavior and to teach him some manners. (My guess is, the enforcement office was trying to provoke us into making an aggressive action that he could respond to with force, and my friend had the same thoughts).

The people we put in charge of protecting us are now becoming the problem and overreacting by abusing their power. It is showing up everywhere, not just in minority neighborhoods.

I guess Southern white boys should be all suspect because one shot up a church. And white male college students all suspect because some shot up schools. If I said Christians were all suspect because of the ones who bomb clinics, kill doctors, and attack gay people the site would, justfiably, be in an uproar. There is no better safe than sorry. This was clearly NOT a bomb. If it was they call bomb squad, don't put it in desk drawer. They were stupid and doubled down. Like MM is being. They interrogated him over and over because he kept telling the truth. It was a clock. A fucking clock.

White boys kinda ARE suspect because of those things you mentioned. There are numerous examples of kids being suspended or expelled because of our societies fear of school shootings. This could absolutely be an example of racial profiling and discrimination, BUT let's not pretend like this kind of overreaction is limited to boys of Middle Eastern descent. I linked a bunch of articles a few posts up, and that was without even really trying. The issue is the zero tolerance policy by schools, and the fear culture that is prevalent in our society. Whether it's a boy like Ahmed with what they perceive as a bomb, or a white kid named Chuck who makes his fingers into the shape of a gun, there is a very real issue right now with how we deal with children and perceived threats of violence.

Don't forget, all young white men in a frat or who play sports are rapists!

It has expanded out from that. I see a lot of stories about men being accused of stalking simply because they're walking behind a woman. I read one guys account of how he was walking behind a woman, she thought he was following her so she ran into a building. He just happened to be walking to work and she ran into his building. As he was walking in, she was telling security about how he was following her. Stuff like that. Men can't be alone with little kids. If you happen to be sitting in a park near a field where kids are playing sports, you're a pedophile. Our society is being overcome by fear. It's getting out of control.

The title of this thread is horrible. I think it should be changed. If he were White he wouldn't be in this situation.
You think they would've called the police? I don't think so for one second...
I
Sure, but no one has any legitimate reason to think it was just to get a big payout.
His Dad is an activist lawyer, isn't he? Isn't that what activist lawyers do for a living?

I'm not convinced it was planned in advance, but I am skeptical...

Yes, it was a clock.....This time.

Nice hyperbole though

Kids getting attacked and beat up by a bully, not even fighting back, and then suspended for fighting by the school. This is what our education system has become.

It was like that 30 years ago as well.

see the picture of them going to see their lawyer. Looks like a family going to the lotto office to claim powerball.

Just wondering, how exactly should they look when taking a picture of themselves?

If his dog got hit by a car and he was going to sue the driver would they look like this? No fucking way.

It's actually quite disgusting.

Yeah, I'm sure if a dog had died he would've been sad in a picture. And if he had just gotten a BJ from a classmate of his, he'd probably look like he just had a BJ.

Not sure what that has to do with the price of tea in China.

Here's a picture of his lawyer at a press conference earlier

In all seriousness, his dad ran for President of Sudan or some shit like that. Also was involved in the trial of the guy who burned the Koran in Florida somehow. Fancies himself as some kind of activist.

Probably not. Looked like a bomb, they don't want people to do this shit, so they laid the law down hard on him.

Well, if you'd take the bomb-making components of "Ahmed" and "Muhamad" out of it, I'm sure it would then look like just another digital clock.

I mean, it has a LED light, a circuit board, and some wiring. No explosive material, but add a "Ahmed Muhamad" to it, then BOOM!

Actually, they are. You don't need to be Tony Starks to know that suitcases aren't necessary components of a bomb. Their only roles (for the terrorists purpose) are to carry the actual bomb and to conceal/disguise it.

Why was the clock in an aluminum suitcase, which is stereotypically what people use for suitcase bombs?

Anyway, this story sucks. Hope Ahmed finds his 72 virgins or whatever the fuck he's looking for after he gets paid.

Perhaps he can be a be a successful muslim engineer someday who, like most muslims, oppresses women and gays. And liberals will unfathomably defend them since they are a protected class for some reason nowadays.

If he was white, this wouldn't even be a story at all even if he got expelled. The fact that he's muslim and everyone's quick to suck on Islam's dick is why this story is out there. You think Obama would tweet about this if he was white? You think everyone would be falling over each other showing their support to show how tolerant they are of white culture? That's what this story comes down to. Some people are fearful of islam so they freak out. Some people want to show they are progressive and tolerable and support muslims, so they go overboard with the overeager support. Some people see it for what it is, a device that looks like what a bomb would look like and dumb idea to bring to school, especially since something like this what people think about when they think about the end game of radical islam.

If the kid were White there would be no story and he wouldn't have had an issue. Obama wouldn't have needed to respond. There's NOTHING wrong with the response and outpouring of love this kid is getting. He deserves it. Have you ever seen a bomb? Probably not. So what does one look like? You don't know. Stop watching 24. It's a bullshit show anyway.

If what mediocre man said is true, "better to be safe than sorry" because others named Ahmed have done all these awful things, therefore it might really have been a bomb - then the school officials and police officers involved should be immediately fired and subject to criminal investigation.

Because if any of them really thought there was any possibility the clock was a bomb because the boy's name is Ahmed (or any other reason for that matter) they needed to evacuate the school at once, call the bomb squad and only after everyone is safe interrogate the "suspect". THAT is "better safe than sorry". Bullshit but at least consistent bullshit.

These people are stupid but not THAT stupid. They knew damn well the clock was not really a bomb. They were racist fuckheads who wanted to bully and frighten a boy because of who he is, which probably also includes being too smart for them. Ahmed reported that when he was called into the interrogation room the lead cop leaned back in his chair and laughed, saying something like of course this would be the one. Meaning a dark skinned boy named Ahmed Mohamed. A cop who thinks there may be a bomb in a school does not lean back and laugh! They knew there was no bomb.

Even what they suspended him for, a bomb hoax, is bullshit. A bomb hoax is when someone says they have a bomb, and don't, but cause panic and wasted time in evacuation. But Ahmed did not do that. He brought a clock and said it was a clock. No bomb. No hoax. Just racist assholes. They deserve egg on their face and yes, a lawsuit.

ur just mad they killed curtis.

Shortly after this, high school student Ahmed's Nuclear Bomb briefcase is activated and explodes. (in the TV show, not in real life) and Jack Bauer has a moment of clarity.
