Seems the U.S. military bombed the hell out of the Taliban leader in Pakistan while he was getting diabetes treatment from one of his wives . . . And, in other happy news, the police in Indonesia have killed the leader of Al-Quaida in Southeast Asia.

My, my, it's a good day for the world.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – With a shattering stroke from the sky, the United States appeared to have dealt a major setback to extremist forces by killing the charismatic leader of the Pakistani Taliban.

BEJI, Indonesia – Police reportedly killed the self-proclaimed Southeast Asian commander of al-Qaida on Saturday in a 16-hour siege of a village hide-out, but authorities said they could not confirm that a recovered body was that of the militant leader without DNA tests.

Local TV stations reported that alleged terror mastermind Noordin Mohammad Top was killed in the lengthy bomb and gunbattle at a house in central Java. Noordin is suspected in last month's suicide bomb attacks on two American hotels in the capital, Jakarta, as well as the deaths of more than 220 people in bomb blasts on the resort island of Bali in 2002 and 2005.

Wow.

Am I the only one that is a little freaked out that CIA drones are launching missiles into Pakistan and actually hitting their intended target?

Don't get me wrong, this is good news for many people. The method just reminds me of how fast things are progressing. It's kinda scary.

Yeah, well, several of our troops were killed in Afgahnistan last week, so I guess it was a tough week for the both of us.

F-ck terrorist they almost cost me my life and they killed 5 of my friends.

I'm glad President Obama has recognized the realities of the world and is continuing the War on Terror (even though he refuses to call it that).

I wonder if that's really the case--or if Obama is just letting the military continue to do their thing, whatever it is. From my experience, most Democrat presidents have little interest in military affairs.

"Freaked out"?? I'm thrilled myself! It means that those scumbag terrorists had better be on the lookout anytime they crawl out of their holes into broad daylight!!

Well he's increased troop numbers in Afghanistan, so I do think he's recognized the importance of those two operations (Afghanistan, Pakistan).

Well, yeah, I could have told you that.

It's the fact that humans have that ability to do these kinds of... oh, never mind. Wrong crowd.

Wrong crowd, indeed. "Praise to Allah," brother.

Hey it's amazing what happens when our president actually uses diplomacy to work with the government of the countries that these guys are hiding in. Isn't it amazing what a little communication can do? Wow all the sudden our drones have Pakistani intelligence bringing in the targets and we have started getting hits from our drones.

What is even better IMO is that the Taliban started fighting amongst themselves when Mehsud was taken out. Returning back to their tribal roots of hating each others guts and fighting with each other. Hopefully they will kill the shit out of each other, and weaken enough we can finally locate Al Qaida's leaders.

Nice spin, if you're anti-American.

Aside from your usual-cheap-shot-with-nothng-to-offer-to-the-thread, the point is that while it is good we're getting into the heart of the master minds of this one organization, it's always important to remember that our fellow citrizens are being killed there frequently. You don't seem to care about it, but I do. The war on terror is one that will be fought until the second coming of Christ. I often wonder if it is best that we are the world's police all too often.

You must be joking. We hit quite a few long-distance targets when Bush was in office. I recall the time we took out a jeep full of Al Quaida dudes while they cruising across the desert. Our precise targeting has been around for a while, and it was used quite effectively prior to Obama coming to office.

Of course they are. It's a war. That's what happens in war. Soliders die.

The point is, we took out two of their top commanders this weekend--and that's worth celebrating. Just because our soldiers are dying, too, is no reason to celebrate the elimination of two high-profile targets. It's also worth pointing out that our enemies have NEVER been able to take out any of our commanders.

The correct translation is "praise be to God," but nice try anyway. If you're ever in Portland come on by my office and I can tutor you in Arabic.
Maybe I should tutor YOU in Arabic.

A notable commentator on the Qur'an from the ninth century, Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Jarir at-Tabari, said,

"The meaning of (Al-Hamdu Lillah) (all praise and thanks be to Allah) is: all thanks are due purely to Allah, alone, not any of the objects that are being worshipped instead of Him, nor any of His creation.

You better brush up on your Arabic, my friend. According to the Islamic Dictionary, the primary meaning of the expression is "Praise be to Allah."

http://www.islamic-dictionary.com/index.php?word=alhamdulillah

What do you think I've been doing all summer?

Look, I've read so many texts in translation, I've translated texts. When you're translating to an English audience, it's "praise be to God." Of course Islamic-dictionary.com is going to use Allah.

Besides, something tells me the language skills of the folks are Islamic-dictionary.com aren't exactly the best in the world.

Praise be to Allah. This phraze is said in thanks to God.

Christ. This whole point is moot anyway! Allah means God in Arabic. It's the same damn word and the same damn God.

Then why did you make such a fuss when I translated it as "Allah" in the first place?

:dunno:

The nation of Pakistan was on the verge of spontaneously combusting when Bush was in office, because he backed a dictator who spent more time fighting democracy than terrorism. It only took the assassination of a universally loved political opponent and the supression of the country's judiciary for the Republican party to stop giving Musharaff the benefit of the doubt and to actually recognize a growing civil rights movement that had just been begging for support. One of the main reasons we've seen progress in Pakistan of late, is because the populace has finally found a government that fosters democracy and its motivated them to turn on extremist factions.

Then why did you make such a fuss when I translated it as "Allah" in the first place?

:dunno:
If you're translating to English, why would you translate an Arabic word into another Arabic word?

Because that is the way the expression was translated on several links I found. Besides, when a Muslim refers to God, it's always "Allah," which is very different from the Christian God of the New Testament.

Yeah, those Pakistanis really hated us under Bush. But, apparently, not as much as they hate us now under Obama:

A poll released Sunday revealed that despite the massive amounts of aid directed toward Pakistan in this administration, Pakistanis peg the U.S. as a far greater threat than the Taliban and even archenemy India.

Anti-American/anti-Western sentiments will always be a constant in Middle Eastern and Islamic countries. The key thing to note is that, under Bush, those sentiments manifested themself into support for Islamic extremism. Right now, you see Pakistanis visibly rejecting those extremist factions. What America has done since Bush left office is foster a Pakistani government that can inspire the trust and support of their populace, while remaining on friendly terms with the West.

The word God means two different things in the English language:

(1) A Christian God that is referred to throughout the Bible

(2) The concept of a single omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent power

Both the Christian God and the Arabic word 'Allah' are examples of (2). So, you can translate the word 'Allah' into God without any difficulties.

Here's why:

This, to Muslims is incorrect. To them, the New Testament God is the same as Allah.

Let's see Wilson was president and ushered us into WWI. Roosevelt was president when we went to Europe and the Pacific to fight World War II and Kennedy and Johnson ushered us into Vietnam.

Hmm the three biggest foreign military adventures this country has been involved in all started by Democrats. Oh and the only unequivocally good war (WW II) was started and finished by Democrats.

Once again Shooter it's you vs. Historical and Scientific fact.
