Think of a number between 1 and 9

Subtract 5

Multiply this number by 3

Square this number

Add each digit of this number together ( ex 15 becomes 1+5 = 6)

If this number is less than 5, add five. If it's not subtract 4

Multiply by two

Subtract 6

Map this digit to a letter of the alphabet (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc)

Pick a name of a country that begins with that letter

With the second letter of that country's name, pick a mammal that begins with that letter

Think of the color of that mammal

Pretty close. Elephants are other colors than gray; the trick is that in situations where the mind has a percieved time limit in which to analyze critically we are more prone to use heuristics to get through cognitive interactions (think: short-cuts). One of these is quickly reaching, cognitively, to whatever comes to mind first. Yes Denmark is the more familiar of those countries. Yes an elephant is the easier choice to come up with (although echidna would also be acceptable). Elephants can be black, or even slightly reddish colored, but the quickest color that comes to mind is gray.
