I was occasionally spanked as a kid. My dad used a belt on me once or twice... it was to the point where I would laugh at my mom when she tried to spank me (I didn't mean to, but it literally hurt her more than it hurt me! ).

I don't begrudge my parents doing that at all. I wasn't a perfect kid, and I deserved to be punished sometimes. Them making me stay in my room or whatever would have been anything BUT a punishment.

My parents never struck me with a closed fist, though, and they never intentionally hit me anywhere other than on my butt (although I'm sure my upper thighs got a bit of collateral damage done to them during the spankings).

I love my parents and I think they did an excellent job of raising me. I don't harbor any ill will towards them for giving me a fear of the belt. Haha.

With all of this being said, I'm not sure that I will spank my kids. If/when I have children, I suppose it'll be a decision I make with their mother.

when a kid is doing something life threatening, and they are too young to realize the finality of death, a good fucking spanking will get the point across a lot better and more efficiently, with less chance of it happening again, than an explanation that they might not be mentally developed enough to fully understand

exactly my reaction. This POS deserves prison time and should be forced to resign his public position immediately. When the Mom says the disabled 16 year old needs to roll over and take it like a grown woman, it was obvious that she was a victim of his beatings too.

I've no problem with parents administering a few swift whacks, but that should be done with by the time the kid is approaching double digits. This was way over the line into abuse territory.

As I explained, when spankings were issued on me, it was when I was doing something very dangerous. My mind wondered a lot, and my parents needed to demonstrate to me just how serious it was that I never do anything like go wondering as a 7 year old into the Arizona desert alone for 4 hours. There were rattlesnakes, scorpions, flash floods, and desert heat that all took lives each year. They never hurt me, but they startled the shit out of me, and even now, I remember the incident. I would say that the punishment was successful. It was not about me getting "out of line" it was about me putting myself in a deadly situation and being too young to understand the consequences.

So to answer the question about my wife, there would never be a reason to hit her because she has full faculties to determine what she should do. What you seem to not understand, is that when I was hit, it was not issued as a punishment, it was administered to cement a moment where I was being taught a lesson. As I said earlier, I was never hit after the age of nine. Because I was old enough to have a detailed conversation with my parents where they could teach me with words. But as a 7 year old, nothing they said stayed in my head for more than a few moments.

Maybe I should have been more clear.

From what I have seen with my nephews, an increase in one on one time of father and son ended up really improving the quality of the relationship and ended up in the son wanting to please the father for positive reasons. I am not saying that this is the case with you, i do not know how much time you spend together. But when my brother and his son started spending a good portion of every Saturday and Sunday together, actively doing stuff, the son started respecting his father much more, and obeyed his father.

Another suggestion is something that worked for me when I was in high school. My parents started sending me to counseling. It turned out that I had a learning disability, and this greatly influenced many of my activities. Simply learning more about myself helped me grow and become a good son and human.

I was slapped by my dad, never punched or anything like that. My mom and dad would both hit me sometimes with tree branches, very thin ones, not thick, but they stung like a bitch.

The fact remains that i deserved it, and it taught me respect. At this point, both of my parents are in their 60's and i truly love them and hate to think about they day they leave this earth. So to answer your question EL, i would more than gladly help not hurt my parents when they become to old to take care of themselves.
