I have not heard of this either. That fellow looks bad enough to make me shy though.
When I was a kid, I tried using what I called waterdogs for bait once when I could not find any Leopard frogs which were super for Dolly Varden. The waterdog looked a lot like this newt but not quite so bright.
Anyway, where the Leopard frog was damn near a sure thing, the waterdog was totally useless.
Maybe this is why.

I had no idea these guys were poisonous. I used to catch them all the time when I got bored during fishing trips when I was a kid. I even brought 4 of them home once and tried to keep them in the garage in bucket. I named them Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelanglo, and Raphael.
