My brother was mentally ill. The biggest hit suffered by the mentally ill happened when Reagan became President.

It's an analogy to Germany coming out of WWII where we've gotta make sure we never go through it again. Not an analogy in magnitude but in quality.
While we focus on making sure this never happens again I think your point is valid and we should be discussing ways to heal the division and solve the sort of problems that caused the Trump phenomenon to happen in the first place. Part of the phenomenon to happen has to do with our ugly side rising to the forefront, namely racism, some of the rest is less understandable but probably includes a segment of our population that feels less heard. Other aspects need to be sought out and looked at.

The problem is no one no matter their skin color is thinking about it from the other side.
People(white, black, green, yellow, orange, purple, etc) are just trying to be as loud as possible, because they believe it's the best way to be heard.

Neither the republicans nor the democrats are focusing on fixing the division created. They're too busy pandering for votes to do that.
The candidates that attempt to focus on healing, don't get enough votes to stay in the races.
