ACORN received $997,402, slightly less than the maximum allowable grant of $1 million.

Coincidence? I don't think so. They're going to get these kinds of grants from the Administration outside the sphere of Congress to try to keep the organization afloat until they can start wholeheartedly supporting them again.

Meh, what have a corrupt group of people like firefighters ever done for us that the honest people of ACORN can't do? :dunno:

I enjoyed their mission statement:

The money, formally awarded for fiscal year 2008, was given to the ACORN Institute, which bills itself as a research and training facility "to combat the poverty, discrimination and community deterioration that keeps low-income people from taking advantage of their rights and opportunities."

WTF?

And the coup de grace:

The FEMA grant was revealed as ACORN Chief Executive Officer Bertha Lewis and Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell sparred over how much money was embezzled from the group by a top official nearly a decade ago.

ACORN says less than $1 million was stolen, but the attorney general claims the figure is as high as $5 million.

This is tranparent corruption at its finest- open, unrepentent and just plain sticking it to honest people and tax payers while laughing in their faces. The lefties are pretty emboldened these days- and I can't say as I blame them. They, essentially, own every facet of government to include the judicial system at present. To the victors go the spoils.

BUT, as arrogance of power brought the dems down in the 90's, and the righties down in the 00's (well, that and an incompentent way of governing), this will come back on them in the near future.

I agree they should just put ACORN on the sidelines for four years. Sort of like a "penalty box" to think about things. My question would be, if Repubs came back in power in four years and ACORN had attempted to meet all of their "penalty" goals under such a plan, do you think the GOP would ever give them a dime?

I don't agree w/ you about the judicial system either. The Supremes are firmly in the conservative camp.

That's a good question. The better side of me thinks that if ACORN went thru whatever they needed to, the righties would do so.

However, the more realistic side of me thinks they would kick ACORN to the curb like a dog whizzing on their pants cuff.

As to the Supreme Court, I think you overstate how far right it is, but I cannot deny they lean a bit right of center. I don't think the new justice will alter that tilt.
