Adams Could End Up In San Antonio

I wrote a slightly longer reply but for some reason it didn't post. Here's the Readers Digest version.</p>

Outside of NJ, I watch the Hawks and Bobcats pretty closely and know the Bernard you speak of but while he may have height, Adams has him on the mental side of the ball 3 times over. Bernard without question has the body and athleticism but Hassan's jumper is just as good/bad and actually used his small frame to sneak behind defneses and gain us extra possessins in the second unit countless times where a majority of the boards Bernard got in Charlotte were at the front of the rim as opposing teams sent doubles and sometimes triples at Gerald to keep off the boards. He can shift to the 2 abut as well as RJ, where you can say they may be able to look the part physically but it should be avoided as they are both natural 3's.</p>

I think Hassan's contract, Franks inability to figure out a role for him, and the overall youth on this team were all factors in his departure especially seeing as we are still looking for veteran additions to our bench. I don't intend to turn this into a Frank bashing thread by any means but his achilles heel is his rotation creativity and while I fully understand what a mess injuries made of the team last year where his already short leash with young players made their margin for error even slighter as we had to fight for every win just to make the playoffs but both were very much factors in Hassan's lack of success as well. I think if anything he just happened to have bad timing being on our roster as we will probbaly see with Mile which is a shame because in his case we knew we were bringing in a project and now he's almost being cast off because of it. Any other season I think we'd be more iclined to keep them around but they just happened to be expendable when we decided to make our one big finals push.</p>

Personally I think Hassan's smarts coupled with his natural instincts and hustle will be the things that give him a leg up on Robinson but just looking at that kid's body will always fool some GM just as LJ3 is getting attention from teams still.</p>

That's fair enough. Again, Bernard could very well be gone by the start of the season. You know, I went into last season thinking that Antoine Wright and Hassan would work great together on the court--Antoine, a SG in a SF body, and Hassan, a SF in a SG body. I figured that they'd just switch roles on offense and defense and would mesh. Alas, for whatever reason, it didn't happen. There's no question that Rod has passed on/ignored players because they were "too short"--note that nearly every draft selection this decade has been of a player considered tall at his position, and they have infrequently signed players that were undersized. There are many cases where this has been a mistake; he has overrated some players and underrated others. However, players like Hassan Adams are a dime-a-dozen. A shortish player with no shooting range has limited value. I still say that the nets should try to acquire Bobby Jones from Philly to play that SG/SF defensive stopper role. Jones may very well be cut preseason, given the number of swingmen now on that roster. Regardless of what happens with Bernard, remember that the Nets now have Robert Hite, who came at no cost and may have more skills than Hassan, at least offensively. Hite was an undersized SF in college, if I remember correclty, but he can at least perform adequately as a SG. Don't know anything about his defensive ability, though.</p>

yeah, i agree with you on Hite. While it may be debateable, i think that Hite has the possibility to become a much better player than Hassan, and possibly Marcus...but that's a whole nutha issue.</p>

While I'd rather have Hassan here instead of Bernard/Ilic, I'm happy there's still the possibility of him staying in the NBA, and the moves THRON has made so far to make up for it...such as the Hite and Benson training camp invites, and picking up Williams.</p>

I'm definately glad that we nabbed Hite in the wake of losing Hassan because of his athleticism and shooting prowess and I hope he gets a fair look in camp as he should if anything make a good combination with Wright and Williams in a 2nd/3rd wave that can make up for Antoine's offensive lulls. Im disappointed Hassan's no longer a Net in some regards but I think he'll find a nice place in the NBA, be it sooner or later, and I understand that we can roll the dice on a Robinson as he is similarly skilled and has a slightly larger contract to help deal in a trade as an expiring but i'll still remain in the camp that believes Adams has far more upside especially if that jumper keeps improving, remember we're talking about a first year player here. I love the heck out of Hassan but it was a business move as we had to make our push and to keep this squad together and i'd rather have that being a Nets fan first and foremost. I know Bobby's a good college player but he showed even less on an overachieving Philly team and could be labeled a dime a dozen type player just as easily as Hassan can. Bobby brings all the things Wright does and doesn't add any new dimension to our squad. That's not to say he couldn't be a good pro i'm just saying he's got about as much of a chance here as Hassan did because we still need to fill other holes and he's not the answer to any of them as neither was Adams. Sucks we'll never get to realy see that Wright/Adams combo, I still believe if Frank used that in a trapping setting we would have had good results. Bah well.
