“I’m not quite sure we have the personnel to play the type of game I’d like to play, which is more offensive-oriented,” the new coach said after the Blueshirts had been limited to one goal (or less) for the 12th time in 32 games. “It’s a challenge scoring goals — I’m not saying we won’t get there — but right now it’s a big challenge, so we have to be [more] defense-minded.
“My job is to coach, analyze the personnel we have and put a system in place that best suits them,” he said. “That’s what I’m trying to do now.”

No shit sherlock...hey Glenn you can change the coaches all you want but if the talent is not there........

This is not to bash the new coach or to lay gold bricks for the old one to walk on...this is a wakeup to everyone who thinks we are/were better than what was thrown out there on the ice.

You should be happy that Torts' daughter took a twitter shot at us before deleting it:

#shotsfired RT @BrittanyKellen: NYR and MSG ... You got want you want right? Hopefully you find some identity.

you can almost see AT's (Al Torts) glowing face as he was quoting those posts.

If anything Al, this proves that AV is 1000x the coach Torts is. AV is adapting his system to the personnel on the team Al. That's why Torts is gone. That stubborn idiot was playing his way and his style no matter what roster he had. Nash and Gaborik? Screw your offensive talent, bang in the corners, block shots, and play defensively. Could you ever in a million years picture Torts saying "my job is to put a system in place that best suits the team?"

The problem is last year Sather made a couple moves to fit the team to Torts' style, then changes coaches but kept the same personnel. There should have been some changes made this offseason but there wasn't.

Is this the same daughter Kreider was banging?

Torts has an act that eventually wears thin. Kind of like Mike Keenan so you just have to hope the team wins before that happens. The Rangers should've went to the finals under his watch and frankly I blame Sather for doing nothing at the deadline more than I blame Torts for that one. That being said it was time to move on. Clearly it looks like this first season under the new coach isn't going to go well. Not surprising being that this roster needs work. Too many completely useless parts.

Once again dan, worry about your own team. Stop obsessing over the Rangers dude. Your team is even worse.

zzzzzzz dan you know nothing. I saw every game Torts coached and it was painfully obvious what was going on. This isn't 2004 anymore, his style back then would not be considered up-tempo by today's standards. But again, he wanted to hold true to what he knows and refused to adapt while the game changes around him. Just like his roster changed around him after the ECF season. Get lost dude, I dont even know why you're here.

Totally missing the point people...torts knew what he had and played a system to best utilized it. He didn't have a full season or real training camp to incorporate the talents of nash with gabby.

It's the only system Torts knows Al. It had some parralels with the roster but I have watched some Canucks games this year as I live on the west coast now and Vancouver isn't playing a different system. Roster is pretty irrelevant with that dinosaur.

Al, I think torts had sathers ears with moves that were made while he was there. I think torts hands were all over jettisoning gabs for 3 guys that include a fast skater who gets beat easily and not physical on defense, a grinding type of center who is offensively inept and the third piece of the deal masquerades as the meat hanging up on the hook in the rocky film. On the other hand he could have made that trade to bring in another scorer instead of vice versa. I'm hoping slats gives av the same latitude and jettisons some of the grinder types and gets some offense in here

Quoted for truth

Are they really worse? At least their games are competitive and they show up. And they have beaten the Rangers all 3 times this year.

Yes

Your leading scorer is 90 years old will completely disapear in the 2nd half like he has the past few years. You traded a #1 draft pick for a goalie who is a UFA at seasons end and doesnt understand why he isnt playing more.

Your team is old, has no #1 draft pick this year because your GM didnt want to lose the 30th pick and you are 12-16 vs teams not the Rangers. Stellar

We have enough problems to not worry about NJ. I suggest you do the same

Yeah I know. 245 Goals (3 Per game) is that conservative "lay down in front of the goalie" Johnny T you think you know. I bet you're all saying, if we averaged 3 GPG the Rangers would win the Cup with Lundquist.

You all (except for Al) wanted him gone and I'm glad you got your wish. Coach and Team on complete ends of the spectrum, players no one wants, and no help on the farm.

TTFN

When Vancouver fires Torts in 2 years will you go trolling their board too?

Exactly. Worse. Around the same. Here is the bottom line, both teams stink right this moment. The rest is just BS back and forth. But with no 1st round pick. A UFA goalie. And more old guys, I would claim the future looks worse for NJ also.

But let's be honest, none of that really matters. It is simply another case of another teams fans claiming they don't care about the Rangers, Rangers stink, they don't affect my life, on and on...YET here they are posting on a Rangers board. Nothing says I don't care about your team more than posting on their board and talking about them...LOL.

You think the Devs will re-sign Schneider? What about giving up a top 10 pick this season because Lou was too egotistical to give up the 1st rounder two years ago...how do you feel about that?

Gabby was a prima dona and had to be moved. Alex The Great was told to switch wings and he took it like a man and found ways to score. Pussy Gabby cried...I cant play the opposite wing. That was done to strengthen the team, a coaching decision, but it was the player acting selfish and being apussy.

No one was complaing about the deal during the playoffs when the only player who seemed to show up was Brassard. Everyone had high hopes that Moore would make Del Zotto expendable. Funny how fast opinions change.

We know. You don't care about the Rangers...LOL.

I am going to the Devs board to show how much I don't care about them. Funny stuff...

this is was is the truth.
Bring in a new coach, but you need to bring in talent that fits his system....the system that he excels at.....

I watch a lot of Devs games too but never in a million years would I spend my time on a Devils board talking about them

I think we can all agree with that Al

Sather molded this team to Torts liking and the team with the current roster of stiffs is incapable of playing another system. We have to suck it up for a year and hope he molds it to AV.

Just be glad that whether Torts is here or not his grinders wont be come July 2014

Here is the bottom line on Torts. The team that made the ECF was tailored to him perfectly. That is why we were able to grind our way to wins. Last seasons team was changed by Sather to have more skill. Thus it was no longer tailored to Torts, and he cannot/did not bend at all, so the team struggled.

This seasons team is a mish mosh of players. Not suited for AV's style. Not suited for Torts' style.

That's why this summer is huge. We have the space to make this an AV team fully. That is why next season will be the really telling season for AV IMO. In theory he and Sather should work hand and hand to make this an AV suited team next season. Just like it was a Torts suited team two seasons ago. The biggest knock you can make is saying why did you take a Torts team and make it a not Torts suited team last season? And then expect a coach like Torts to do well. That's the knock you can make. The knock on Torts is he did not bend or adapt to his players, which is what good coaches do. So it was the perfect storm really.

I dont think you need to sell out one way or the other on coaches as we saw the danger with cultivating your roster too much to a coach - When you change coaches you are screwed....but you have to give them more skill than this Ranger team has.

The other problem is our top guys must be our top guys and whether its due to injuries or age that hasnt happened

I have ZERO regrets about firing Torts and I still believe in AV. We are well positioned, its too bad we have a Sather as GM but we have some great pieces to build around, pieces other teams (cough cough NJ) would love to have.

Lundqvist is probably overpaid but at worst he is a top 3 goalie in the world and is locked up in his prime. There is no denying this.

Nash might be overrated but concussions aside he is still a very good 35 goal power forward

Kreider appears to be legit power forward as well who will be cheap for years and could easily be a 30 goal guy

Callahan is a strong captain who as he gets closer to 30 is injury prone but is still a good 25 goal 60 pt player with intagibles thru the roof.

The defense despite our banging on MDZ and others is still young and really good overall. We need McIlrath to develop and someday they need to find a true point QB but most teams in the NHL would love to have our problems on defense

This team needs to a first line center, another 2nd line winger and 3rd and 4th line depth. That is not impossible to get especially when you have nearly 40m in cap space to do it.

Alas we have Sather so who knows what this roster will look like

No doubt. You need to have some skill and some grinders, we agree. But this team is simply not even close to skilled enough to do what AV wants to do. Just the way it is. We need a skill infusion this summer. Along with having a banger on D. And a couple of bangers/grinders upfront. Having a Dorsett and Boyle on your 4th line isn't a bad thing in general. It is a bad thing when you have 6 guys like them, or similar in that they cannot score at all.
