With the start of the 2014 NBA Playoffs less that 24 hours away, NBA.com has released their final “Race To The MVP” rankings of the regular season. After starting the season not listed, then making the Top 10, eventually moving all the way up to third, then falling completely out of the Top 10 only to return in the final weeks of the season, Trail Blazers power forward LaMarcus Aldridge ends the year ranked No. 5 …

"Aldridge made the transition from All-Star to MVP candidate is one of the true surprise stories of the season. Not much was expected of his Trail Blazers, who were among the top teams in the entire league through the season’s first three months. They stumbled after the All-Star break and when Aldridge went down with a back injury, but promptly resumed their impressive play when he returned. Aldridge asserted himself on the boards this season, averaging a career-high 11.1 rpg to go along with his career-high 23.2 ppg and career-high tying 2.6 apg. His length and ability to face up and stretch his game out to 19-feet makes him a matchup nightmare on most every night. The Houston Rockets will soon find this out in the first round of the playoffs."

Aldridge doesn’t seem to be getting much credit for his career year or the unexpected success of the Trail Blazers this season, as most of the ballots for All-NBA teams I’ve seen do not include Aldridge. That’s not entirely surprising, as power forward is the most stacked position in the NBA, but anyone who watched the Trail Blazers after Aldridge went out with a lower back contusion knows just how valuable he is to Portland. Finishing fifth the NBA.com MVP ranking reflects that.

Aldridge ends up in fifth behind Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Blake Griffin and Joakim Noah. He is ranked ahead of Al Jefferson, Stephen Curry, Tim Duncan and Goran Dragic.

He should be second team All-NBA.

Going to be tough competition to get there. Durant, Lebron, Love, Griffin, George, Carmelo. I can see him being 2nd team. Can also see him being left off completely from all 3. Maybe not rightfully so, but can see it happen.

Congrats to LA. He was really hurt in the standings by his groin then back injury. We were quick to be dismissed, so when we swooned without him and then when he came back too early, he shouldered the blame.

Just an amazing season by our #12. All I ask of him are just sixteen more wins.

Go Blazers!

I love your outlook max! Enjoy the ride!

Go blazers!

I'd put Jefferson at 5 and LMA at 4, IMO.

KS would be proud right now.

Cool so we can chant mvp through playoffs and the Nancy's wont bitch right?

Do you really freakin' care about the Nancy's while you're at the games?

Chant whatever you want. Just make sure you're loud and proud behind Houston's bench during the playoffs!

Look who was #4.

I'm pleasantly surprised.

Though the Bulls made some late season moves to get enough under the cap to deal with bonuses in Noah's and Taj's contracts.

Taj is a legit 6MOY candidate.

Is Noah going to be 1st team all-nba?

Noah sucks.

Noah as a top 5 player with rose coming back, max cap room, and the 16th and 19th pick in the draft.

Nice

Nice job LA! Its odd that Rockets fans and so much of the national media keep saying they have the two best and two superstar players in this series.

Great season for LA but he seems to be overlooked for an all-NBA team. Listening to a lot of analysts talking on ESPN/Simmons(who actually has a ballot)/CBS eye on basketball/Starters and almost no one was talking about LA even for third team all NBA when discussing the subject.
