Alex Ovechkin guarantees a Game 7 Win for the Caps (1 Viewer)

The Caps knew their season was on the line in that 3rd period of game 6, and they played like it. They gave it their all and couldnt break through. Ovi is trying to convince himself more than anyone with that statement.

Barry Trotz said today that he liked Ovechkin being “bold” and showing confidence in his team. (Gulitti)

I agree Prod...he is reaching for anything IMO. Maybe it will work out for him...who knows.

I absolutely love this. The Capitals had pressure to win yesterday and outside of the big push in the 3rd wilted. They know what its like to play a G7 at MSG vs Hank. They did not want that game. So there was pressure yesterday and big pressure on Wed and now even MORE pressure put on by Ovechkin by making his guarantee. I think its very dangerous to assume because they dictated the last 12 min of the 3rd that they will do that next game.

I love when players who have never made it past the 2nd round and havnt done much in the past 4 games make playoff guarantees especially when they are going in a building where the opposing goalie has been unbeatable the past 9 elimination games.

All this does is put more pressure on Ovechkin and Holtby.

Not sure why this puts any additional pressure on anyone but Ovie himself. He is putting himself out there, rallying the troops around him basically saying...lets go boys im here jump on my back and lets roll.

If they win everyone will say look at how the leader rallied his team around him, taking the pressure off everyone else and putting it straight on his back.

If I am in the room and heard that from my captain I would be all pumped up and ready to go right now.

Al I would agree with this 100% if the Caps didnt just drop 2 in a row after a history of not being able to close out series and win big games. If the roles were reversed, and the Caps had just won two in a row to tie it up, I'd agree with your statement 100% and I'd be thinking "shit, Ovi is coming." But like I said above, at this point it appears that Ovi is trying to convince himself here more than anything else.

I know Messier's guarantee came after losses as well, but he had a history of winning. Not a history of losing. I have no doubt that all that talk of collapse and choke is circulating in Ovi's head right now, and he's trying to project the most confidence he can. It rings hollow to me, and I wouldnt be surprised if it rang hollow to a few guys in their room as well. Not saying they dont think they can win, but Ovi doesnt necessarily strike me as the type of leader who can pull off statements like that.

I would agree if he was Patrick Ewing and guaranteeing all the time. Now I haven't followed OV's entire career so I ask has hr made these statements before? And not for nothing but each game could have gone either way this isn't making that big of statement compared to if they just lost 5-0 and 3-0.

I don't think he has.

Let me reverse it on you Al. You said if they win people will say what a leader and he took the pressure off his team. What if they lose Al? Does he go down as even a bigger loser than he is viewed as now?

I am with Prod because I think he is trying to convince himself more than anyone here. Like I said earlier, I 100% am onboard with him being confident. I just don't know why he has to guarantee anything. Just say we will show up and play well. I am confident in this team and in the character of this team. Why guarantee it when you haven't won a darn thing in your career. That is why I think it is about him trying to convince himself and motivate himself.

Just my opinion, but truth is at the end of the day none of this will matter anyway. The game will get played and these comments won't have much to do with the result. I do think if I was a Ranger player I would love hearing OV say this. Just a little extra raise of the eyebrow from the players I'd think.

Give credit to Lundqvist for getting in the caps head after game 5, he's the one who said "they don't want to come back here"

Given the Caps franchise failures he probably had to say this. Think about it, its bad enough to blow a 3-1 lead but they blew a 3-2 lead 2 years ago AND got shutout in the final 2 games. That combined with their rich history of blowing leads he is just trying to change the mindset which I suppose is good. I just find it funny when players who have never gotten out of the 2nd round of the playoffs start making playoff guarantees. He has never won a cup, he has never even skated a shift in a ECF and he is going to guarantee a win Wed. Well, ok.....

For the record I love Ovi's game too but I don't like the Mess comparisons. Messier was most famous for his leadership abilities not the edge to his game, although that edge was a huge part of his success. The NHL named an award of his behalf around leadership, not chippiness or playing with an edge. That is my issue. I think there was enough pressure on Ovechkin already, this adds much more and that is dangerous. Even more so when you factor in the opposing goalie who I would be shocked didn't play an outstanding game on Wed night.

Lundqvist has a much better track record of playing at a high level in elimination games than Ovechkin does. Will see how this turns out.

For the record, Ovechkin is 2-4 in Game 7's in his career w 3 points

Don't care one way or other....what he guarantees. Rangers need to
play their game.......and I hope they do mot go 16 minutes without a SOG.
That's just insane.

The Rangers built a 4-1, and then went into their version of the prevent allowing the Caps to get back into the game. If they keep attacking, the Caps don't get back in it.

I think they'll have another strong start tomorrow and score a goal... Just like Rick Nash broke the drought, Keith Yandle needs to have a game where he has 3points. I also think the 4th line will chip in a goal. They've been playing great.. Turned into a good line with Sheppard playing in the middle. He was 8-9 on faceoffs

Miller could have had a couple last night. Had a stupid icing, in that awful 3rd. Hopefully he learns a lot from the experience

Yea he sure does make a lot of mind
boggling mistakes.. Makes sense to play Moore and Sheppard down the middle of they're going to win faceoffs. I guess they want to give Hayes a break and play him at wing... I don't hats that line because they've had chances too but that Miller-Hayes-Hagelin line was good in the regular season

OV has a right to say anything he wants but he sounds like a desperate fool. He went a bit overboard with saying that the Rangers d is afraid of them. That only will pump the Rangers even more, not like they need it. Cant wait to see OV at the handshake line in tears on Wednesday.

he does score sometimes but they know how to keep him in check once he gets going. They make adjustments as his game is very predictable. I do think they need to have a plan against Ward and Chimera. Those guys always drive to the net hard.

Chimera has been killing the Rangers for years I swear we are the only team he scores against in the playoffs

Game 7 cannot be a OT game. Just too chancey the way
the puck bounces around the goal. I could not take it.

Washington loves the bang and hustle game. Rangers need
total discipline to combat these Caps.

Rangers win game 7 4-1 and this time AV allows them to attack with the lead. Caps are not winning here under any circumstances in game 7. OV going from msg to russia immediately after game.

I am so sick and tired of watching OV charging and
ramming Ranger bodies into the boards away from
the puck time and again. And no penalty calls.
OV really thinks he's a gladiator in a slippery den.
This crap must end now.

I have to laugh. Reading all the comments from Trotz and some writers you would think the two choices OV had were guarantee a win in game 7 OR say we'll lose...LOL.

I guess he couldn't have said I am confident we will play well and bring our A game. I have a lot of faith and belief in this team and expect us to show up ready to play.

He couldn't have said that. Either I guarantee we win OR we'll lose...only two options...LOL.

I'll say this about game 7, it is a game 7 so of course I am nervous and don't want the offseason to start.

There are only two things that give me pause:

1. OV blows up the game. He knows this is so huge for him (let alone the team). He would take a huge hit if the Caps blow it AGAIN and he makes a guarantee and his team gets beat. He has to show up big.

2. Overconfidence on our part. I don't see it, but I do think about it a little. Oh we came back from 3-1 down how can we lose now. We are home for game 7 how can we lose. We are great in game 7's and elmination games and especially elmination games at MSG (and the Caps are NOT), how can we lose. Hopefully doesn't mean we show up a little flat and the Caps come out on fire and get an early lead.

These are the things I worry about. I don't see it happening, and expect us to win a hard fought low scoring game 7, but I do think about these things, and really believe the Caps will show up ready to play a very good game, and get a touch concerned.

I don't think OV has a huge game. There's a reason he never made it passed the 2nd round. I remember against Montreal when Montreal came back 3 to 1 Ovechkin was nowhere to be found in those final three games

Always a possibility, but I think will shut them down one more game

I don't have the problem with guarantee at all.

What bothers me the most is the arrogance which most Russian players have which irritates me to the core. I was born in USSR and ran away from that shit, and now to hear this just driving me crazy. He adds to the stereotype.

He is top 3 players in the world if not #1 right now. Show a little class. You represent NHL and also Russia.

I hope Rangers can pull it off. It is going to be hard......

OV shouldn't be excused of all blame, but you cannot possibly hang it on him as the reason he (ie. Caps) haven't made it out of the 2nd round. For the most part his teams haven't been all that good, and he hasn't had anyone else on the roster with ability close to his making him the one player the opposing team can only focus on. It's harder when you're far and above the better player on the team and don't have a Malkin/Kane type of player who can take attention away from the other team.

He is the star player. He has been the star player for 10 years. He gets paid a ton. His team has won a Pres trophy. His team has won many divisions. His team has blown many series leads. His team has lost many series as the higher seed. All facts.

No doubt it is a team game and not all on OV, but he takes a HUGE share of the blame IMO. Just the way I see it when all those facts are reviewed.

It is also why I think he will go all out and then some to make sure his team doesn't lose this game 7.
